Don't get me wrong. I liked Beckham when he was playing for us. He was one of the best players we have had. He is also a nice and likeable chap. He has recently played a key role as an ambassador for English football.

But does that entitle him to automatic selection to the GB team? There are 3 places available to over 23 years old players. There must be players playing more competitive football in the premiership who could be more eligible. Just looking at the English/Welsh players: there are Gerrard, Lampard, G.Johnson, Milner, Barry, A.Johnson, Bellamy, Parker, Defoe, Rooney (is he >23?), Carrick, Ramsey (is he >23?), Lennon, Walcott to name just a few.

He is lobbying very hard for inclusion. He has said he is keen to be captain even. Why should he be included if there are better players than him?

The FA has said none of the Euro 2012 players will be included in the Olympic squad. So that probably excludes all the players you have listed apart from Ramsey (who is 21) and Bellamy who might be the other over 23 year old.

Besides which Beckham hasn't been selected, he has been included on a list of 184 players who are interested in appearing...

He is lobbyng very hard for selection and to be captain. It does seem a bit OTT.

I wouldn't say he's lobbying very hard. He had a press conference to announce his new contract with LA and was asked if he'd like to be captain of the GB team and he said yes. The media just love to report everything an ex Utd player does. One of the tabs even reported that his son asked him for a rubber when he was drawing and his American friends thought his son wanted a condom <doh>

Same with the Cantona for President thing - it was just a publicity stunt but cos he's ex Utd the papers splashed it around the world...
