Is the clip below a depiction of a horse having his heart broken? The race is one that even all these years down the track, brings people back for another look. The two horses involved were the unquestioned Australian pacing champion of the day, Pure Steel, and the young upstart Satinover, both from West Australia. Both were stallions and right from the outset, Pure Steel made it clear he was boss cocky. As you'll see even before the off.

A heated debate had broken out between the connections as to which of the two was the best, but no suitable race could be found to match them. So the officials in the West stumped up a winner take all purse. Egos couldn't resist. Going into the match race, the 8 year old Pure Steel had traveled the land taking scalp after scalp. Some were suggesting he was the best horse the country had ever seen. The black flash Satinover on the on the hand, had never competed outside WA. And the precocious 5 year old already had a win over Pure Steel on their shared home track. He entered the race on the back of a 19 streak winning sequence. Satinover started 4-6, Pure Steel 1-1. A massive crown turned out for the clash. The crowd tells the story, an amazing sound.

Satinover was never the same horse again. He'd win 2 of his next 13. Was he intimidated by a more dominant spirit in the pre-start and did he bow to the alpha male at the finish? Even coming back together after the race, Pure Steel seemed to tell Satinover to **** off. Either way, Satinover, in full flight, was certainly one flash looking mother.
