The contenders: Mark Cavendish Darren Clarke Alastair Cook Luke Donald Mo Farah Dai Greene Amir Khan Rory McIlroy Andy Murray Andrew Strauss What a **** selection. Dario Franchiti and Ricky Burns the glaring omissions i suppose. Cook has been sensational this year and should win it imo. Brilliantly consistent.
Who would you pick out of them Rebel?(and who do you think will win it? Surely McIroy must be one of the favourites?)
The BBC being the self serving bunch of pricks they are usually heavily favour 'athletes' from sports they own the rights to broadcast. The short list will consist of Tiddlywinks and marbles players in a few years then.
Do people know enough about Cavendish though? Also, they have a cheek putting the word, "personality" into the title, as there have been a few past winners with none whatsoever, a Scottish cyclist for one!
Is it a phone in thing? I think it is. Darren Clarke probably. Going round the course, pishing down with rain, smoking ***s and with a big belly will appeal to people. It was on BBC too which will help.
High achiever right there. He's not a swashbuckler, but he has been as good this year as almost any english cricketer ever.......maybe.
Cavendish has won the Green Jersey at the Tour de France this year and also is the World Champion Road Cyclist. Cracking personality too in my opinion but he can rub people up the wrong way. Take the french paper L'Equipe (Sp?), that paper does not like him and will try their hardest not to write much about him.
Not a massive golf fan but Luke Donald to my knowledge has yet to win a major so he should not be there. That goes for Andy Murray too. Amir Khan had two decent enough of wins against Maidana and Judah but a few years ago we had the likes of Lewis,Hatton and Calzaghe so that shows you the lack of contenders. From that list, I would also go for Cook. Played good test teams and destroyed them all year.
Mo Farrah for me...Having said that I don't watch cricket, cycling or golf so my opinion isn't massively valid!
Interestingly: Ian Bell has considerably better stats than Cook for 2011, he's so underated. Strauss has had a pretty poor year with the bat. Anderson has had a very fine year.
Cook has opened and given the england team an incredible platform. Bell has come up the order and done incredibly well but the stats can lie a little. It is harder to bat at 0-0 than it is 400-2. Cook has given that more often than not this year. Mrs Tindall.
