Once there was only one outlet in the NE for football fans to listen to and the 3 Legends of Gatesy, Super Drunk and Slaven started the ball rolling. The personnel may have changed at times but in essence, up until some 18 months or so ago, The Legends had the monopoly. Then along came Auntie and the BBC Sport programme with Marco Gabbiadini and Steve Howey (a solid mackem lad, who simply couldn't face talking about the filth every night so left), then Jon Anderson. Chaired by Simon Pride, this new programme was like a breath of fresh air for me and I have been a convert since day one. Long before the Beeb started their football phone in, the Legends for me had lost its way completely. Slaven was the best of a bad bunch for me but Super drunk is just a sozzled, bar fly who talks so much ****e its unreal. He spouts what he must think are witty, intelligent comments on football here in the NE but what to the rest of the planet sounds like inane gibberish. He is a prize ****wit. Horses-swill is not far behind him. Totally unaware of anything to remotely do with SAFC post 1973 cup final, he is a total embarrassment IMO. He gets names wrong, knows nowt about any players and rambles on with totally unfunny innuendo and boring old mans smut. Slaven maybe the best but the best of this shower ain't really saying much. On the other-hand, Gabbers and Anderson are interesting, informed and refreshingly honest and Pridey holds the chair very well. Its the Guardian of phone in shows compared the the Daily Sport offered by Real. Listened tonight (reason for the post) on my way home from work, only to hear Mac Whiskey-breath deride our new signings as cheap and nasty and then said Larsson was ****e as well. Wonder if the inebriated ****wit would have said the same had he signed for the craas instead. Thats what makes the BBC show so much better. Both lads tell it how they feel and of course there is some good banter but also some intelligent comments from all sides. So, whats the verdict? Legends or BBC Sport?
Can't get away with the BBC show, though I agree that Spackdonald is a ****ing tosser, Horses swill not much better. I used to like Eric Gates as he always told the truth, that might have been his downfall. Like Bernie Slaven though, canny lad.
Used to love the legends years ago, but it got too boring and repetitive. That Macar kid drives me mad, most annoying person ever. Super drunk is the most boring bias tw@ going. Its embarrassing when women ring up and they start slapping their todgers about. I gave the BBC show a go when it first started but Macar was constantly on that aswell. Had to stop listening or I would have developed a serious anger problem.
I won't listen to the local BBC Radio station whilst they persist with a name that is unrepresentative of the North east as a whole. The Legends has went back since Gates left, so I rarely listen to that now either.
I used to listen to the legends but I don't think any of them know much about anything when it comes to the current world of football. None of them ever know anything about players from over seas and barely much about players at home. They rarerly have inside info and I'm not a prude, but as I recall it was a lot of dire sexualised puns and double entendres. Which became very boring, very quickly. I actually love talksport. I listen to it all the time travelling around for work and on the way home etc. I find they usually have their fingers on the pulse and have quality debates, that make the 3 legends look like amatuers who know nowt- which in essence is what they are!
Used to be a fan of Gatesy when on the legends as he told it straight and knew what he was on about. Horsewill is an embarrassment! You'd expect someone who's job is talking about football would at least pick up a paper and do some research, but the guy obviously doesn't have a clue. Macdonald is just a sneery biased joke. Slave just irritates. Never caught the bbc show so can't comment. I tend to flick between talksport and 5live these days. Mind you i find talksport has a very southern bias to the point that even the adverts are all voiced by cockney geezers!
Used to listed to Gatesy and Bernie Slaven when on shift work at datsun years back, superdrunk has always been as thick as pig ****. In real life i'd sooner gnaw my own cock off then listen to football phone ins.
Total Sport is the best programme by a long chalk. The lack of football knowledge of the Legends makes me cringe at times. For example, none of them knew that Villas-Boas had managed the side that won the Europa Cup last season. "What's he done?" they all cried in unison, when they heard that Chelsea were going to appoint him. Embarrassing.
1/ Bellend Slaven 2/ Micky Bellend 3/ Malcolm McBellend.... Those names certainly have a ring to them....
Well I have a soft spot for Slaven like. Maybe they should call it the Malcolm McDonald show seeing as how he shouts anyone down that dont agree with him.
I've listened to bbc sport quite a few times and am happy to do so when the occasion/opportunity arises. Some serious banter there. Whilst Marco (red and white) and Anderson (black and white) are passionate about 'their' teams, they are to me quite realistic whilst remaining loyal. I'm not so keen mind you on the football commentary with Nick Barnes. Gary Bennett's insights are wonderful, but we don't get enough commentary from Barnes. He rabbits on about anything but what is going on in front of him. One day he'll miss a goal.........
I just listen to TalkSport now - Listened to the legends and, like everyone said, when Gatesy was there it was excellent but after he left it went downhill. Can't stand Malcolm MacPrickbellend - complete pompous twat - Slaven is OK but Horswill is useless on there - he was complaining saying we had an unfair advantage last season due to our loan players - Everyone plays by the same rules Micky. Don't mind Total Sport on BBC - Gabbiadini I like and Ando is OK as well (for a mag!!) but TalkSport is the only radio I really listen to now
