Living in Teesside, I listen to away games on BBC Radio Newcastle.

Gary Bennett is the co-commentator and I think the Match commentator is Nick somebody (cannot think of his surname).

Anyway, this guy has been commentating for a few seasons now and IMO is absolutely dire. If Sunderland were playing in the Champions League final, he would make it sound like a Sunday morning kick about.

Spends most of the time spewing out meaningless drivel which he has prepared earlier, rather than describing the action on the pitch. Many times an incident takes place or even a goal is scored, and it takes a while to figure out if it's for or against us, such is the lack of clarity in the commentary because they seem to forget that their job is to describe what's happening rather than being there as spectators.

Have to say the guy who does Newcastle commentary is much better, though obviously I cannot stand his joy when things are going their way.

Wish we still had the likes of Charles Harrison or Guy Mowbray covering SAFC.

I quite like Gary Bennett but Nick Thingy is awful.

The bloke before him was better. Can`t remember his name or why he stopped.

    Was that Guy Mowbray?

They're ****e, both of them. Nick Barnes could send a maniac to sleep and Gary Bennett's footballing views are stuck in the 90s.

He'll be in one of Barnard Castle's betting shops. That's where you used to find him anyway <laugh>

Anybody here know the real reason behind Gatesy leaving the Leg ends show some years ago. Never heard anything at the time and ever since just heard about some confidentiality clause so he won't speak about it. I assume its got something to do with that bellend Mcdonald, but would be interested to find out if anyone here knows anything about it

I was led to believe he wanted more money than they were prepared to pay, called their bluff and they let him walk away. True or not I could not say.

Did like his honesty and forthright views though, always said what he was really thinking.

Shame the Legends show went downhill fast though when Bernie Slaven started messing about every night, turning a good talk-in show into a childish slapstick routine.

This is a BBC station which is supposed to represent a region...By its very name it obviously does not, so that is why I will never give it air time..

So have you also never used Newcastle Airport for the same principle?

It's not the same pinciple to be fair.

A local media service is there to provide a balanced view on regional affairs, report news and react to local people's concerns & opinions.

Surely an airport is just public transport.

Me too, but have you listened to that t++t on talk sport, nobody would ever attend a game at the Stadium ever, its always boring or freezing or both, and the f=======g glee in his voice when the opposition score is sickening, why we let him anywhere near our ground beggars belief. Its like inviting ISIS to join the UN. And and while I'm on a rant, I've never liked Bennet, loved Gatesy tho' Happy Xmas Everyone. :)

I'd go further than that. Its a Beeb radio station, not just a commercial one. As a result the need to be representative of the area it broadcasts should much much greater.

Exactly the same principle on the basis of both having Newcastle as part of the name.

Nothing wrong with his principles by the way if that's his way, just wondering why just the name should bother him at all.

But then you couldn't call Newcastle Newcastle!

The principle seems to be about not using anything or service with Newcastle as part of the name, not about not being able to call Newcastle itself by name.
