Only 10th best in the view of the BBC.. Vettel better not be ahead of him. Number 10 - Fernando Alonso http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/formula1/18957703 Number 11 - Alberto Ascari Number 12 - Gilles Villeneuve Number 13 - Nigel Mansell Number 14 - Mika Hakkinen Number 15 - Lewis Hamilton Number 16 - Nelson Piquet Number 17 - Emerson Fittipaldi Number 18 - Jack Brabham Number 19 â Graham Hill Number 20 â Jochen Rindt Still no word of: Ayrton Senna Alain Prost Michael Schumacher Jackie Stewart (in) Niki Lauda Jim Clark (in) John Surtees Phil Hill Juan Manuel Fangio Sebastian Vettel Stirling Moss?
I will laugh so hard if Seb is ahead of Alonso, yet I still think this is list is all but equal with all 20 drivers.
Oh now that's just trolltastic from Benson: Disagree with @alo_oficial's ranking of 10th in #BBCF1greatestdrivers? You can now tell us why by commenting on story bbc.co.uk/sport/0/formul… So now they have fully admitted this is a ranking system...
If this really is averaging the votes of the BBC's F1 team then they're being quite short-sighted. Some of the names yet to appear on the list would be tragic to miss out. Hamilton's inclusion was a stretch, certainly to beat out drivers like Piquet, and Alonso has not to my mind proven himself worthy of a top 10 placing yet. One presumes Vettel will miss out of the drivers you've listed yet to appear...
Surely Seb is not in top 10 ahead of Alonso, if he is that is ridiculous. Senna, Prost, Fangio, Schumi, Clark, Stewart, Surtees, Moss and Lauda will be rest of top 10, not in that order though.
It is of course ridiculous to make a list like this as you cannot compare drivers from different eras. The fact that drivers prior to the 80's were running a huge risk of killing themselves makes a big difference in attitude between then and now. I can't see some of the current line-up making it so far if they'd had to drive the cars/circuits back then. Regardless of that, you can only make a list of the best drivers from their respective eras, but without putting them into a particular order as everyone's opinion will differ. From the drivers left on El_Bando's list I would definately not include Phil Hill or Sebastian Vettel. Sterling Moss is a must, as are the other 8 (imo of course).
Why is Phil Hill more undeserving than Hamilton, Moss or Gilles Villenuve? 2 of them don't even have a world title! He also won the le mans 24hr 3 times!
Well many believe that Hill inherited his title when von Trips died, and that car was a lot better than any others. Also Moss was runner-up 5(?) times, to Fangio and Hawthorn and Villeneuve is commonly regarded as one of the fastest of all time, who would have one if fate didn't decide otherwise
The BBC said theres 4 current drivers in the list. We've had 2 and another will obviously be Schumacher so its either looking like Vettel will beat Alonso or the BBC lied.
I can understand the reasoning for voting Vettel high since he's the youngest double WDC and all but he is not one of the best of all time, no way.
Bensons write up on Alonso really does focus on the ugly side. Hamiltons write up did not contain Hungary 2007, spygate or Liegate.
I sort of agree, and since this list was compiled between the 2011-2012 season we had just seen 18 months of Vettel domination. It the list had been written right at this moment I feel Alonso's stock would be higher and Vettels a little lower.
And he was beaten by Jody Scheckter in the same car for the world title and he isn't even on this list.
I suppose so, I didn't write this lsit though I think its similar to Senna in the fact that he died which means he's more highly regarded
Sure hope Seb doesn't go higher than 9th as I would start to duck for cover if he gets above somebody with a real high F1 profile like the past legends. "9th:Jim Clark" (Internet crashes)
I think its very difficult to compare drivers from differing generations and also hard to evaluate a driver who is still active. I dont dispute that Alonso deservedly sits within the top 20, but it is then difficult to say that Seb doesn't - they are after all both double WDC.
Forza's gonna go mad. I said this after Villeneuve's: I've been right so far. It does seem silly given the season we're having that Vettel is ahead of Alonso, it would've helped if Benson had written Alonso's profile up to 2011 given that's when it was voted on. Can't wait to see Benson's profile of Seb, trying to strike a balance of justifying his 8th or 9th place on the list whilst slagging him off at every opportunity. Schumacher's should be interesting too... Edit: Completely agree with this by the way.
The lack of world titles doesn't mean that Moss wasn't one of the greatest drivers of his era - he was. I think that is generally accepted across the board. Gilles Villeneuve was special, and a great talent but we weren't to see the best of him. Phil Hill was also talented but I can't see him as one of the all time greats. For me, Mario Andretti was the US's best F1 driver. I guess you also have a dislike of Hamilton.
