Just watching the BBC's "A Ghost Story For Christmas", a one from the 1970's "The Ash Tree" by M.R. James and I was wondering if anyone has any favourite stories from then or the recent revival by Mark Gatis? Personally I really like "The Signalman" by Charles Dickens and "The Stalls Of Barchester Cathedral" by M.R. James, along with a honourable mention to "Schalken The Painter" by Sheridan Le Fanu (it was an episode of Omnibus rather than one of the dramas).
I remember reading The Monkeys Paw by WW Jacobs when I was a teenager. I enjoyed that one. The Simpsons did a parody of it on a Treehouse of Horror. I was given a MR James anthology for Christmas one year. Pretty sure I read The Ash Tree. Never finished the book though.
The Dead Room was my favourite as it makes you question your own ethics and existence. The lead was Simon Callow who’s still underrated imo, probably because he comes across as ‘an actor’with a capital A if that makes sense.
