    Anyone remember it?
We watched the game from the cricket pavilion! Joint top of the 2nd division for a short time after 2-1 win and 40000+ crowd. I always look for this paper headline when this fixture comes up. It was a memorable tuesday night back in 1971. upload_2018-8-13_15-52-55.png

I was there. Three days after being knocked out of the FA Cup 6th rd by Stoke at home after being 2-0 up in 30 mins. Travelled by train direct to Sheffield, about 5.00pm, the city was buzzing at the time, everyone seemed to be heading for Bramall Lane on that Tuesday night. Knighton and Baxter making their debuts too. Sheff Utd unbeaten at home, top of the league and we fancied our chances.
Remember huge queues outside the ground, rumours of the ground already being full , but we got in ( me and my mate) into what is now the away end, then it didn't matter. Soon spotted as 'Hull fans' and we, along with a few others mingled into that packed terraces had to be on our toes all night. City were in the Shurham Street end and the side stand. Foggy night, and they scored first and our stand actually shook with the noise. Remember some tasty tackles from both sides and the ref halting the game at one point and bringing both captains together to 'calm it down'
We equalised, I think from a Simpkin shot and then went onto to win it at the Shurham Street end when Waggy headed home ( a rarity for him) Stand out memory for me was the entire ground echoing to 'HULL CITY, HULL CITY...' for the last ten minutes and seeing the City fans in the opposite end celebrating when the winner went in. At the end Ken Knighton stood in the centre circle with his fist raised in triumph to the City fans,.
The walk back to the station wasn't for the faint hearted and when we got there the City fans were queuing outside in a semi circle being pelted with bricks and bottles from a safe distance by United fans, It was all very 70's and it was nothing out of the ordinary to be honest. We had a fabulous following there that night, one of the best I could remember and we all honestly thought we were going to get promoted to Div 1 after that momentous win. I think we only won another two games after that and slipped down to 5th place, which was a huge, huge disappointing end to a season that promised so much.

Went in a Singer Chamois with three mates - spent two hours dodging hordes of Shoreham arseholes before the bulk of the City buses arrived, can remember very little of the game itself but will remember it for the noise and atmosphere, that and pouring pints of water into a leaky radiator during the trip home.

Went with the old fella (no longer with us) got to ground at approx. 6.45pm, queued for one hour. Got in. Saw very little...Got home at midnight. At school next day. Happy days..Did we win another game after that? I know we got turned over by flaming Oxford next game with Ron (chopper) Atkinson, kicking everything above grass.

Was at both of the games you mention. Was living in Leeds at the time. Me & another Hull lad hitched back to Hull for the Stoke match. Got in very late & the place was packed. Could only make it into the very top row in the NE corner, so it was hard to see Waggy's 2 goals against Banks.
We managed to coax a mate from Sheffield who had his own car to drive us down to Sheffield (he was a Wednesday fan, so we thought that was gonna be fun !).
Great atmosphere. If I recall, I think it was Knighton who scored the equalizer. Not even sure Simpkin played in the game. Both were blond mind, so could be mistaken. Simpkin & Knighton on the park together - two enforcers of note - so maybe they were the root cause of the media headlines.
    My memory is failing...

I was at the Battle of Bramall Lane too. A group of us went on what was known as the "Ferriby Parish Bus". It was an old single decker bus or coach that had been bought by one of the community groups in North Ferriby - not sure who. Suffice it to say we came home with fewer windows than we set out with and a small collection of bricks that had appeared through them. Thugs.
As for the match, I remember Knighton and Baxter making their debuts, the ref calling the teams together in the centre circle to ask them very politely to calm down. And a vicious tackle by a guy who had up to then been one of my favourite players - Tony Currie - on Roger deVries; slightly above his knee.
Also it was when the ground was still used by Yorkshire for cricket so there were only 3 stands around the pitch.
Some games you remember for ever.

It was always a battle at Bumhall Lane , my first ever away game (82?) Football special train, police escort from the station and back, bricked in the ground whilst waiting to get out, up to the Wembley game with 'massive' my most disliked Shaftield club ...

I was at both. It was so full at BP that I ended up standing I the Well next to the tunnel. I saw both of Waggy's goals well. At half time I was contemplating where I would get the money for a semi final ticket and where it would be played. We went on a trip from school organised by the maths teacher for the Sheffield game. He was a mad keen Blades man. He regretted telling us that on the journey back! We started in front of the pavilion because that seemed the safest place but squeezed our way into the stand on the left hand side of it behind the goal as the pavilion was too far away to see. I was convinced we would go up. After the match we couldn't find the coach. We asked a policeman where the City coaches were parked but, perhaps not surprisingly, he couldn't tell us. Fortunately, it drove past looking for us. It was midnight when we got home. School next day was good though. We had maths.

My first ever away game as a kid the battle of Bramall Lane. The old man god rest his soul took me and our kid in his van and we picked up two other City fans on route who had misse a bus I think ? Vaguely remember being at the opposite end we scored twice at full of City fans after going down 1-0. Incredible site at the far end with thousands of City fans in the corner of the home stand going mad when Wagstaff scored and I think Terry Neil was playing then but could be wrong? One last thing that stands out was them hitting the bar in the last minute directly in front of me and the Blunts ground only having three sides to it back then due to cricket. Pretty sure we lost next game at home which was typical City as I was about to find out but that night was special for us alright.

I was on the phone to 211422 a few times that night and got sent to bed unhappy when the score was still 1-0.

Found out next morning it has finished 1-2. The first inkling that the Hull City Score Service message was often at least 20 mins behind.

Radio Humberside hadn't been invented and Look North was in fact Look Vermin- no other team got a look in.

The we got the likes of Peter Ward ( Wessie with no apparent interest in any sport), Elliot Oppel, Charles Ekberg (eccentric yellowbelly bigmouth) and scoreflashes every 20 mins or so.

Even worse the away games where RH relied on Radio Oxford and Radio Portsmouth for their score updates and the local commentator always seemed to double up as the chairman of the their supporters club. " Hull City not in it, Oxford/Portsmouth totally in control and dominating the game etc". Always smug when they scored against us and grudging when we scored.

How unpleasant were Sheffield in the early 70s? Dirty **** Trevor Hockey, ditto Len Badger and niggly Alan Woodward. Charmless bunch of ****ers even then.

I didn't release that game was so soon after the Stoke cup game. I went to both. It was around this time it began to sink in that strolling around a city for an away match wearing your colours three hours before kick off could be bad for your health. The tipping point was Millwall away - thank goodness hostage taking wasn't in fashion then.

My first trip to Bramall Lane was just after Keith Edwards went back to Sheff Utd and all the City fans were singing about a City fan shagging his wife. Abiding memory of Kempton is the home games with them when we were right next to them with only a little wooden fence between, fans spilled out on the touchline and everyone screaming ' we only hate Sheff United'!
