...should we expect some high calibre signings this summer?

well if you read what they said, that funds will be sanctioned for players depending on the player... im guessing age, potential etc comes into consideration.

lets just hope we can sign a manager who can attract some decent players or/and who has a decent scout to help him out..

Well until the manager is known we won't know what players they want, system, style etc. I just hope that the Allams aren't going to interfere & try & make the manager do what they want!

I would say no. Based on what they said I'd expect us to sign more players of the same standard as the ones we signed last summer in order to pad out the squad. Then if we get to January in a similar position to last season they'll make available funds for a marquee signing or two to make sure we finish the job, and next year the manager won't be under the impression that saying no is a good idea.

If we do sign marquee players now then we're not going to be able to afford to have much depth so despite the higher quality we'll be totally ****ed by 1 or 2 injuries (even more so than this year).

Based on what they said, yes we can expect improvements to the squad. They can only lie about this for so long, if another manager comes in and mysteriously doesn't improve a threadbare squad when he definitely has ample opportunity to do so, people will surely start to ask questions...

That I agree with, I was taking "high calibre" to mean players comparable to Billy Sharp.

I genuinely feel if we had a manager who already knew how to deal with the board of directors, then the Allams would back them.

We had a completely rookie manager with a completely rookie football club owner.

It was a mistake to appoint NB and the Allams will have learnt some valuable PR lessons.

To be fair they are probably feeling a bit hard done by, when they prevented us going out of business they then get roundly criticised and outlandishly accused of all manner of evil intentions.

The financial restrictions the Allams are having to put in are entirely down to Russell Bartlett and Paul Duffen.

If Mike Ashley, hated as he has been by Toon fans, can ignore the critics and create success through radical new financial practices at a football club then so can the Allams.

In that case they shouldn't talk about spending millions before a transfer window.

No manager should be going to the press with his demands. No one will convince me that NB could not have put his case for new signings / contracts privately to the Allams and if he felt he could not continue under their conditions, then left his post with dignity.

It was totally naive and unprofessional to go to the press rather than his boss.

Can you tell me of anything he actually said that was even slightly dodgy?

Until this came out no one said anything about it at all. Not one person on this board expressed even the slightest concern with what he has said.

I certainly remember stating that the Allams were clearly pissed off. I said at the time that it spoke a thousand words that THEY issued a response to his demands rather than Hull City AFC.

Why January? you want players in for the start of the season. You're getting better value, and 46 games from them too.

They have said top 6 a priority, money is available. Based on that, I'd expect some decent calibre players, not necessarily 'fee' players.

The exact words don't matter - talking to the press rather than to your employer does, and it made the Allams look like they were just the cash-cows and nothing else.

Most managers bypass talking to their bosses and talk to the media instead? If they do that's ridiculous.

If no one can actually think of anything he said that was a problem then he obviously hasn't done anything wrong. As I keep saying, no one had a problem with it at the time, it's only since hearing the crap from the Allam's this morning that people have started blaming NB for what he said (but they don't actually remember what he said)

They'll talk to both just as Barmby will have done, but you hear the kind of thing Barmby has said from all managers, it really wasn't that controversial.

Because I think the marquee signing would be someone over and above the budget rather than being part of it.

The budgeted squad should be good enough to get us in a position to challenge. It will be a self sufficient club so it'll be full of McKennas and Hobbses so that if we have a disastrous first half of the season we regroup for next season.

If we're in with a chance of promotion in January then they let us break the budget for a short term deal on a PL quality player as there's a better chance of promotion returning that investment promptly.

If we sign the marquee player now then they have to be part of the normal budget in case we have a disastrous start, and that means compromising other parts of the squad. Plus, can you imagine the complaints if we had the marquee player in now, and then were in with a chance of promotion in January and didn't add to the squad to secure it whilst our rivals strengthened for a second year running?

You can't refuse to spend money if it isn't made available, despite what certain stories (I use the word story to help signify the fact they are fiction) in the press are saying.
