Newcastle United were linked with a move for striker Bas Dost back in the summer of 2012, after the Dutch striker scored 32 goals in only 34 league games for unfashionable Heerenveen.

That of course was the summer when Mike Ashley failed to allow any investment after finishing fifth and a massive wasted opportunity to build on that breakthrough season was lost.

As for Bas Dost, he headed off to Germany for £6m and scored a decent 12 goals despite making only 24 starts for Wolfsburg in all competitions.

Last season though, the 6ft 5 striker made only 6 Bundesliga starts and another 7 as a substitute, scoring 4 league goals.

Now the German club are reported to be keen to sell after picking up….Nicklas Bendtner!

Alan Pardew is said to have retained an interest in the player and while figures of up to £8m have been placed on Dost’s head, Newcastle could well land the forward for far less if they take their interest forward.

When there was the first reported Newcastle interest in Bas Dost, we put up the following video footage on the website featuring a Heerenveen hat-trick for the striker – his goals start from 2.15 on the video.

One of the best films I've ever seen, Jurgen Prochnow was brilliant.

Not for me, we need a powerful striker in the Bony mould. Massive clanger dropped not investing in him!
