Barnsley v Swansea City Competition - Sky Bet Championship Venue - Oakwell Date - 24 November 2021 Kick off - 7.45pm Following their disappointing 1-1 home draw against Blackpool - a game that the Swans deserved to win - next up for Russell Martin’s Swansea squad is an away fixture at relegation threatened Barnsley. Last Saturday, Blackpool Manager, Neil Critchley, was able to celebrate his new contract by claiming a point at the Swansea.com Stadium thanks to Keshi Anderson's late equaliser at Swansea City. Joel Piroe's high-class goal had looked set to give Swansea a fifth straight home win but, in a game of few chances, Anderson prodded home to extend Blackpool's unbeaten away run to three games. Swansea were frustrated not to hold on for victory, particularly given that they were harshly treated by referee Keith Stroud who waved away a number of penalty appeals, with one on Ethan Laird being as stonewall a penalty as you will see. Indeed, the Swans have yet to be awarded a spot kick in the Championship so far this season …. As a result, Blackpool stay 10th in the table, three points outside the play-off places, with the Swans two points further back in 12th. Whilst the Swans were being held, Barnsley were being thrashed at Craven Cottage as Mitrovic headed his 21st league goal of the season as Fulham made it seven Championship wins in a row by sweeping aside the struggling Tykes. Mitrovic - who has also scored three goals for Serbia in World Cup qualifiers since September - beat Brad Collins from six yards and Fabio Carvalho cut inside to double the lead before half-time. The visitors, whose new Head Coach Poya Asbaghi took up the role today (Monday) just in time to face the Swans, lacked a comparable cutting edge despite the return of Carlton Morris from injury. And Neeskens Kebano and Harry Wilson made the points safe in the second half either side of a consolation goal from Barnsley sub Victor Adeboyejo after Cauley Woodrow's header rebounded to him off the post. After Saturday’s games, Barnsley are next to bottom, and are only above Derby because the Rams have suffered a 21pts deduction. The Swans have played the Tykes on 78 occasions, winning 38, losing 24 and drawing 16. The teams met at Oakwell twice last season - once in the Championship and once in the Play-Off semi-final - with the Swans victorious on both occasions: Turning to Wednesday, this really is a game that the Swans need to target as a win if they are to harbour hopes of making a strong challenge for the Play-offs. However, I would not be surprised to see Barnsley enjoying some kind of ‘new Manager bounce’. As such, I think that the match will end as a 1-1 draw.
Thanks Taff. I hope we can put the disappointment of Saturday behind us. I expect us to control this game. So if we can keep it tight at the back and show a bit more of a cutting edge upfront then I think we can come away with the 3 points. So it's 1-0 to the Swans for me.
If we can control the game as we did in the first half v B/Pool (70% possession) , a decent ref and more decisive in front of goal then 1-2 to us ,
Thanks Taff...hopefully we will continue to control the early part of the game and score some killer goals and not be given sympathetic comments about how well we play football....they are beatable and are not 23rd for nothing....an away win is available as I am not going
Swansea City statement: "Swansea City is saddened to learn of the passing of former manager Frank Burrows at the age of 77. "The Scotsman was appointed Swans boss in March 1991 and guided the club away from the threat of relegation, before winning the Welsh Cup with victory over Wrexham at Cardiff Arms Park. "Frank was a popular and much-loved figure at the Swans and within Welsh football, and everyone at Swansea City sends their sincerest condolences to Frank’s family and friends at this sad time. "The first team will wear black armbands in his memory for this evening's Championship fixture against Barnsley before a further tribute at Saturday’s home game against Reading."
Frankie Burrows was very much old school and didnt suffer fools gladly ...he banned the players from our wedding party because they lost......and I remember being in the Harry Griffiths bar after we had won the Welsh Cup on a Sunday in Cardiff against Wrexham....he was bladdered....but he was a true gentleman
