Harold Dennis "Dickie" Bird, OBE (born 19 April 1933),[1] is an English retired international cricket umpire. During his long umpiring career, he became a much-loved figure among players and viewing public, due to his excellence as an umpire, but also his many eccentricities.

Bird played first-class cricket for Yorkshire and Leicestershire as a right-handed batsman, but only scored two centuries in 93 appearances. His career was blighted by a knee injury, which eventually caused him to retire aged 31. He umpired in 66 Test matches (at the time a world record) and 69 One Day Internationals including 3 World Cup Finals.

In February 2014, Yorkshire announced that Bird was to be voted in as the club's president at their Annual General Meeting on 29 March.[2] His autobiography sold more than a million copies.

GENTRY DAY

What is Gentry Day?
North End Gentry day is a fan organised event and is in memory of any Preston North End follower or player who may have passed away in the last 12 months.

The Gentry term was first used by third division championship winning manager Alan Ball Snr in the early 1970s stating to the Press after a game that

"Preston fans are the best, they're the gentry".

This inspired a number of PNE fans to don bowler hats and even pin stripe suits at Deepdale and especially amongst a loyal band of away supporters.

In 2005 supporters organisation The Preston Supporters Group (PSG) arranged the "Return of the Gentry" in memory of John Tracey, a member of the original PNE Gentry who sadly passed away. This was a massive success and even saw North End's players wearing the famed bowler hats on the pitch.

In 2008 with the support of PNE-Online and other supporters groups, PSG decided to make it an annual event for all North End fans and the people of Preston to remember anyone they may have lost during that season/year.

The Last Gentry day that fans could attend was in 2019 when a sell out away end celebrated the day at West Bromwich Albion.

Although PSG are now disbanded a wide range of North End Supporters have come together with the club to keep the Gentry Tradition going.

The club held discussions with new supporters group Preston Supporters Collective and a vote then put to the supporters to decide the final venue.



Gentry Day has now become a proud tradition for the folk of Preston and it's football club and has been well received by supporters of all the clubs chosen as hosts over the years.



We are sure all supporters will once again will be pulling out all the stops to make this seasons Gentry Day a great day in the PNE fans' calendar

 

PNE Team News

Andrew Hughes will be assessed ahead of the weekend, with the defender having been forced off in Monday's game with a toe injury.

Ched Evans is still struggling with injury and is unlikely to feature, whereas this game is likely to come too soon for Tom Barkhuizen, who played his first 45 minutes since January in the Central League earlier this week.

Ryan Lowe confirmed in his pre-match press conference that Izzy Brown and Josh Murphy are no longer training with the club and will therefore not feature in the remainder of the season.

After the highs of achieving a Play-Off place last season, Barnsley have endured a difficult campaign this time around, with the Tykes having been relegated from the Championship.

Starting the season with Markus Schopp in charge, Poya Asbaghi took over with the side struggling, but he didn’t make the desired impact and as a result the South Yorkshire side will spend next season in League One.

Now with Martin Devaney in caretaker charge, they will be looking to end the campaign on a high, with nothing to lose going into their final two matches.

Barnsley have scored fewer goals than any other Championship team this term, having netted just 32 in their 44 matches.

North End midfielder Daniel Johnson has scored four goals in his last four appearances against the Tykes.

Brad Potts, who played 67 times for Barnsley, has been on the winning side in all four of his appearances against his former employers since his departure to Deepdale.

David Webb will referee his fourth PNE fixture of the season and the 21st North End game of his career.

PNE have enjoyed their games with Webb in charge so far this season, having won away at AFC Bournemouth, earned a late point against Sheffield United and most recently beating Lancashire neighbours Blackpool with Webb as referee.

So far this season, Webb has taken charge of 34 matches, showing 115 yellow cards and four reds.

A brace from Daniel Johnson and an Emil Riis strike earned Preston North End all three points against Barnsley on Gentry Day.

Two fine strikes from DJ – left wing back on the day – and a good finish from Riis helped to turn the game around after Aiden Marsh’s early opener for the already-relegated hosts.

There were 2,000 PNE fans in attendance on the club’s annual Gentry Day, as they paid respect to those who are sadly no longer with us.

Ali McCann, one of two changes from Monday evening, had the first chance of note, firing just over from the edge of the area six minutes in.

However, the hosts took the lead with their first real foray forward, as Victor Adeboyejo kept the ball in at the byline before hooking it back to Marsh, who found the net with a first-time effort.

Ben Whiteman almost drew North End level immediately, firing a low effort goalwards from 25 yards, but Jack Walton made the save down to his right.

PNE did find an equaliser soon after, though, with great work from Riis creating an opportunity for Johnson, who saw his effort go in off the far post.

Riis then nearly got one for himself, having a vicious effort from a tight angle kept out, before Daniel Iversen had to deny Carlton Morris at the other end with a fine diving save.

Whiteman was so close to earning North End a half-time lead, taking the ball on the bounce and striking a fizzing shot towards goal which took a nick off the crossbar on its way over.

PNE went ahead nine minutes into the second period, and in some style too, as the ball was laid back to Johnson on the left corner of the box and he expertly found the far corner with a superb curling effort.

Riis could have made it three on 68 minutes, being found free in the centre by Cameron Archer, but the Dane’s effort was saved at close range.

He did get his goal six minutes later, though, taking down Van den Berg’s ball over the top, before rounding the ‘keeper and finishing from a tight angle.

Mikey O’Neill came on for the last ten minutes or so and nearly scored his first professional goal with his first touch, firing just wide of goal, and he later fed Maguire who had a close-range shot tipped over late in stoppage time.
