vs Football for a fiver returns this Saturday as Charlton Athletic take on Barnsley in an npower Championship match. The ticket promotion is likely to see a packed Valley with around 24,030 tickets having been sold by wednesday evening. There has been a two week break in the Championship due to the international break with the obvious highlight of the whole thing being Jonjo Shelvey make his England debut against San Marino. In our last outing we was really impressive beating Blackpool 2-0 a game i expected us to get nothing from. Barnsley in their last outing took on Leeds in a yorkshire derby. They ended up losing 1-0 with a goal from Luciano Becchio. Previous Meetings Barnsley 0-0 Charlton Athletic 21/02/2009 Charlton Athletic 1-3 Barnsley 01/11/2008 Barnsley 3-0 Charlton Athletic 26/04/2008 Charlton Athletic 1-1 Barnsley 06/10/2007 Top Three Goalscorers- Charlton Athletic - Barnsley 2 Kermogant - 8 Davies 2 Jackson - 2 Dagnall 2 Fuller - 2 Mellis Team to play Barnsley - Hamer Wilson Morrison Cort Solly Green Stephens Hollands Kerkar Fuller Wright-Phillips Subs Button Dervite Evina Razak Pritchard Hulse Jackson One point and four places separate us and Barnsley in the league. Their main threat is Craig Davies and if Morrison and Cort can keep him quite Barnsley shouldn't have much else going forward. Being at home and it being Barnsley I would expect us to win at home but that is exact mentality that would see us lose this game. An example of this is their 5-0 thrashing of Birmingham earlier in the season however if our boys stay focused and the larger than normal crowd don't get on their backs then i see us running out eventually winners against this Barnsley side.
Great thread, Belvedere. I wonder though whether The Doctor will go 4-4-2, considering that our last 2 4-5-1 games against Blackburn and Blackpool have been good performances, whereas against Watford we went 4-4-2 and were dire. In which case Razak will play instead of BWP.
Top man, belv. I think I read a headline earlier that jacko should be back for the game- if so, do people think he will be straight back in the side, or will he keep faith in the side that played Blackpool? It will be interesting to see whether we go 4-5-1. With a capacity crowd you would assume the management would like to play an attacking, attractive game. That will definitely be the hope in the boardroom. I think CP will resist the urge to go 4-4-2, and keep the 4-5-1. How we will fare with it at home is tough, and fans can quickly get restless when using that formation. Barnsley are no turnovers either, and I'm sure Keith hill will be quick to point out that our club see this as an "unfashionable" game (which football for a fiver usually are) and use it to motivate his team. I think it will be a frustrating afternoon and will go for a 1-1, with us knocking on the door for number 2, but Barnsley holding out.
Would like to see 4-4-2, why show Barnsley the respect of 5 in midfield? Think their win at Birmingham was a freak result and can see us winning relatively comfortably, Fuller and Jackson off the bench.
Excellent Belvedere - thank you. Back to real football. I am duly respectful of Barnsley after seeing them slaughter Birmingham City, but if we continue in the Blackpool vein, we should be too strong for them. Not a fan of 4-5-1, especially at home and it'll be interesting to see on which side The Good Doctor will fall. IMO, JJ's place should be on the bench for this one. He's not having a good season and he shouldn't be an automatic choice simply because he's fit. 2-1 to us.
Watching the Sheff Wed Leeds game, Llera and Semedo both playing, not sure about anyone else but I's love to see Semedo in our midfield again.
I'd go 4-5-1, because it's only then that we seem to be able to get a foothold in midfield. And Fuller's presence up front means that the attacking disadvantage everyone assumes is inevitable when you play 5 in midfield is negated. Jacko on the bench, the side that started against Blackpool should play. 2-0 Charlton, not a stellar performance but enough to get the win.
Not as much pre match interest in this thread. Does it have anything to do with the fact it's football for a fiver? Come on all, get your predictions out for the lads!!
Seems like about five years since I was a home game - missed Watford as I was in Portugal playing golf. Dontcha just love international weekends. Not! Quite a big game this. 3 points to consolidate on the Blackpool result would see us in pretty good shape. A defeat and we're right back in the doo doo. Fingers crossed. Can't call this one as I don't know much about Barnsely or which version of us will turn up. Should be lots of pre-pubescent voices to keep us awake if its a crap game. Bah Humbug!
Should be 4-5-1 for me. I don't agree with all the negativity rubbish... It wasn't negative against Blackburn, it allowed us to gain control of the game and create chances. We have performed better so far in the few examples of it. Apparently some teams like Barca don't even play a 'striker' with the bizzare buzzwording of the 'false 9' & that's not considered negative, why show Granada the respect of 6 midfielders?
Charlton team: Hamer Wilson Morrison Cort Solly Green Stephens Hollands Razak Kerkar Fuller Subs: Button, Evina, Jackson, Wright-Phillips, Pritchard, Hulse, Dervite So we have gone 4-5-1. COYA!
Ye gods, Oz - you're up early/late. We don't do thrashings any more unfortunately, we do emphatic wins...ah, nostalgia.
Player working fine for me. Match sounds fairly dull, Barnsley on top. Barnsley commentator: "Charlton don't look like they've got anything to offer, apart from set pieces"
