    PRESTON NORTH END V BARNSLEY

    DEEPDALE 9/9/2017 Kick Off 3pm

After a break due to what apparently constitutes International Football, the real stuff returns with three games in seven days two at home and one away, first up those lovely lads from South Yorkshire, Barnsley having bheen promoted the season before last the Tykes finished in a decent 14th place last season winning 15 games although interestingly they won more away games than home games one of which was at Deepdale 2-1 with Armstrong scoring a classy winner for the visitors. Since then the Yorkshire side have had a few changes in personel on the pitch with four of their main goalscorers having departed for pastures new, only Bradshaw remains from the top five.
New arrivals this season include Brad Potts who played for our near rivals at the other end of the M55 plus several loan players including the traditional one from Chelsea, Ugbo they have also taken Gary Gardner on loan from Villa.
So far this season, away from home they have managed to come second both times at Bristol City and Sheffield United they also had their captain MacDonald sent off for headbutting Leon Clarke(well worth doing for a red card) so I assume he will still be suspended. They are an attacking side so should be a decent game.
Big question for us is Pearson fit, no news on the midfielders dead leg, if he is suspect unchanged side, cannot see any of those who played in the County Cup gamne starting on Saturday.

The man with the whistle for Saturday’s first game after the international break is referee Peter Bankes.

Making his first appearance at Deepdale since last October’s home victory over Aston Villa, the match official will be taking charge of his ninth game of the season, having issued 26 cautions and two reds so far this campaign.

Last season’s clash with the Villains was his third visit to Deepdale as referee. His first was the 2014/15 season’s 3-2 home win over Port Vale in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy and then in 2015/16 he was here for the last game of 2015, when we defeated Hull City 1-0 just after Christmas.

This is his fourth year on the Football League referee’s list having also taken charge of our win at Chesterfield in February 2015, when Joe Garner scored twice on his return from a period out injured and last season’s defeat at Leeds United in April.

He will be assisted at the weekend by Tim Wood and Mark Dwyer and fellow select group two match official Darren Bond will be the fourth official.

Despite first meeting in league action here as long ago as December 1901, this is only the 25th time we have played the Tykes at Deepdale in the EFL.

It took nine attempts for our visitors to register their first win, which they have only repeated on six subsequent occasions. However, four of those victories have come in their last six visits.

Despite averaging 3.5 goals per game, there has not been much in the scorelines of our contests, with the notable exception of 1951, when Ken Horton’s hat-trick contributed to a 7-0 North End win.

On the other hand, there has never been a scoreless draw between us here at Deepdale!
On This Date – 9th September
The first time we played a league game at home on this date, it was a clash of the ‘two and only North Ends’ as we faced Glossop!

Prior to joining the league in 1898/99, they had been called Glossop North End, supposed in honour of PNE, but dropped the ‘North End’ when they found themselves playing at the same level as us after promotion to the first division at the first attempt.

Coincidentally, Glossop’s record attendance was for an FA Cup tie against us in 1914 before they failed to be re-elected to the Football League when it recommenced in 1919.

Players born on this date include Dale Rudge (1963) whose name the North End fanzine ‘Deepdale Rudge’ adapted as its title.

Kurt Nogan was also born on this date in 1970 and he was our leading goalscorer in 1998/99, which include his brace against Arsenal that gave us a 2-0 lead on live television.
Charlie Wayman was one of the smallest players ever to appear for North End at little over 5’5’’ tall, but he knew his way to goal. From his debut on this date in 1950 until he left for Middlesbrough four years later, Charlie scored 117 goals in only 171 appearances.

In his four full seasons, he passed 20 league goals on each occasion and scored seven hat-tricks, amongst which were all four goals in a 4-1 victory at QPR on Christmas Day 1950. He also scored in every round of the FA Cup when we reached the Final in 1954 and gave us the lead in the second half before we finally lost 2-3 to West Bromwich Albion.

Paul Raynor made his final appearance for North end on this date in 1995 after two eventful years when the combative midfielder established himself as a favourite with the fans, which included scoring at Wembley in the Play-Off Final defeat to Wycombe in 1994.

Preston North End 1 Barnsley 1 Att 12800
    Maguire 23 Potts 26

In the end probably a fair result in a game which both sides could have won, plenty of positives for North End although the loss of Pearson for a longish spell is a bit of a blow. The midfielder didn't play against his old club following his injury at Middlesbrough, North End were also without Johnson as well. Gallagher, Spurr and Mavididi came into the side with a welcome return after nearly a year out for John Welsh on the subs bench.
A fairly low key first half which North End having the better of the first 25 minutes although the experienced Hamill down Barnsley's right caused North End problems.
The home side took the lead mid way through the half when Barkuizhen got in down the left hand side put is a decent cross which Maguire headed past Davies in the Barnsley goal.
The visitors were level three minutes later when Hamill put in a cross from the right, it looked to hit Potts's back before going into the net. The goal rocked North End and Barnsley were on top for the remainder of the half, Potts should have doubled his tally from about 18 yards ended up high in the Town End.
Barnsley should have gone ahead when they got in down the right hand side very early on, somehow not sure how Ugbo missed from three yards but it was a great clearence by Fisher.
This sparked a period of pressure were we did everything bar score, Huntington header well saved by Davies, two Barnsley defenders in quick succession tried to score for us, but the visitors weathered the storm and with the intorduction of Moncur they began to look dangerous with Maxwell having to make a decent save from the ex Colchester man.
Both sides pressed for the winner with Harrop showing some showboating skills although it was one of hisn dreadful corners which eventually was cleared from the line.
Barnes could have won it late on for Barnsley after some non too clever keeping by Maxwell, he blazed over when well placed and Maguire was denied right at the death by Davies.
Fair result but plenty of promise.
Fair play to Hugill put in a decent shift, Mavididi looked good in phase, cameo from Harrop. Earl possibly had his hardestb game some inexperience at times, top dog for me Tommy Spurr.
Finally on personal view the lack of pump beer on the Finney deserves a season ticket refund although the first two cans of ale that they poured were almost frozen solid which did bring laughter..

    Preston manager Alex Neil:

"The disappointing thing is that we spoke about dealing with Hammill down the right and dealing with balls into the box which is where the goal came from.

"It was frustrating that we didn't win the game. We started well but I thought that after 30 minutes it opened up and for the 15 minutes leading up to half-time we needed to make more passes and the game became stretched.

"We had great opportunities to put the game to bed. There were some great chances for us to win the game but we didn't."

    Barnsley manager Paul Heckingbottom:

"I was pleased with the point. It was a good game, both teams going for it in the end. Lots of good performances from everyone so I'm pleased.

"Everyone in front of Adam Davies defended great and he made that one really big save at the end and that's what we've come to expect from him. He's played his part.

"We could have had more quality in the final third. Their goal sprung us into life. We then had a bit more urgency in our play and probably our better chances came on the break at the start of the second half."
