brb takes a very brief look back at his own article when we last met:

    Gillingham 3 - 1 Barnet

The Gills had been unbeaten for four games with three consecutive wins, going in to the evening game at Priestfield on Tuesday 6th March 2012. The weather although dry was a chilly 4c. The attendance for the match despite Gillingham’s recent revival was low again at 3,751.

The Gills in the first half were kicking towards the Brian Moore Stand and number four Charlie Lee nearly opened the scoring within two minutes of the start, with a shot outside the box that went just wide of the post.

Gillingham persisted in attacking the Barnet goal, with runs from Charlie Lee in the early minutes, however, just before the quarter hour mark an attack on the edge of the Gillingham box, defender Garry Richards went to ground. Although I should have had a straight line of sight, it was unclear to me what had happened. It was immediately obvious Richards was in much pain and something serious had happened, Izale McLeod was nearest Richards but I did not witness any contact. After some while Garry Richards was subsequently stretchered off and later it was reported as a suspected broken leg. Garry Richards was replaced with Callum Davies, who had a difficult task ahead, as Richards had managed to frustrate McLeod.

The match continued and Gillingham dominated most of the first half hour with little reward for their efforts. Then on the 30 minute mark, Paulo Gazzaniga had to pull off a great save in the Gills goal but McLeod buries the rebound only to be immediately judged off side by the referee.

About five minutes before half time, Barnet went 1-0 up through number 21 Clovis Kamdjo, after a corner and confusion within a packed penalty box. To be fair to Kamdjo he was the player in the Barnet side that was making the most noticeable contribution.

Strangely around the 45 minute mark it appeared as though Izale McLeod had taken himself off, so many events happening on the pitch, I just turned to see McLeod off it. He was to play no further part in the game for reasons which were unknown to me. I was glad to see the back of the player, although the incident with Richards was unknown, he certainly was not a favoured with the home supporters and there was some confrontation between him and the Gills keeper Paulo Gazzaniga, more like handbags at dawn but I think McLeod did enough to lead to the confusion within the Gills box that led to Barnet’s first goal from the corner.

At the half time interval, it felt as though the score line did not do the Gills patchwork side any justice. When I say patch work they certainly did not play like that and were far the better team. It is just Gillingham have suffered so many player injuries recently, I am amazed Hessy has managed to put a team together.

At the start of the second half Dennis Oli replaced Danny Kedwell. Within an instant the Gills were to get their just reward, when the ball found Oli on the right after about a minute after the start of the second half he slotted the ball home to level the scores 1-1.

Dennis Oli, the player that was made available, with no reported interest. Now the Rainham End was singing his name. Dennis Oli certainly brought about a change to the game that was now going to bring the goals.

Up front with Oli was 17 year old young striker Ashley Miller, who absolutely gave his all for the team. Barnet’s number 21 Clovis Kamdjo appeared to be stuck to our young lad with glue. Every quick turn or break Miller tried to make, Kamdjo would muscle him out. Miller had several chances on goal saved by the Barnet keeper, he also had a good shout for a penalty to which the ref completely ignored and Miller could but just get up, walking away shaking his head in disbelief. I think Oli was the strength that Miller needed to help him. Then around the 75th minute the pair worked together again, Oli flicking on to Miller who shot at goal only to watch the Barnet keeper parry it away, for new loan signing Jordan Obita to collect and smash home from close range. Delight at the goal on Obita’s home debut but you had to feel for Ashley Miller who so wanted it.

2-1 Gills, Priestfield is rocking and we are on our way to a fourth consecutive win. Charlie Lee gets a deserved goal and makes it 3-1 on 86 minutes, as he remained calm and just took his time to ensure it hit the back of the net. This young Gills side had torn Barnet apart.

I wished Garry Richards a speedy recovery.
