Back in June I suggested that long term it might be an idea to build a new state-of-the-art stadium on the Costessey Showground site. Looks like Roy Blower has 'stolen a march' as there is a distinct possiblity that a new speedway stadium may well be built there.

Peronally I've never attended a speedway meeting but my Dad used to go back in the day at the old Firs Stadium and used to love it. I could be tempted to give it a try as it would be easy to get to from where I live. Football and speedway on a Saturday ? Could be good, but I doubt the missus would be chuffed if I was out all day and night <laugh>

i think you will find speedway meetings are held during the week, seldom at weekends. so your missus will have two free days a week instead of one long one.

Evidently it was Saturday nights all those years ago, but you're right it appears that speedway meetings are now held mid-week <ok>

I used to go over 50 years ago with my dad! I still remember Ove Fundin, Aub Lawson, Billy Bales, oh what fun, and the smell of the fuel they used, I can still smell it!

Ah, to reminisce - me too! Great times. One of the first houses built on that site was called Fundin house! Ove was a true legend of the sport.

Would like to see it come to Norwich again, but it will be opposed vehemently and won't happen, sadly.

Great days Dave and don't forget Olle Nygren. Whether it was because I was a kid but it always seemed packed especially with the Golden Helmet races.

My memory has it packed too! The funniest thing I ever saw was Billy Bales crashing into the boards, he was up like a shot, straight back on his bike, but failed to notice that his front wheel had been knocked round by about 45 degrees! He set off full throttle, round in a big circle and straight into the boards again! He gave up then!

That was Castrol 'R' Dave, once smelt never forgotten. There used to be a conical shaped can on most garage forecourts, it had a pump on the top, we used to put one shot per gallon in our bikes.
I bloody love speedway, bring it on!!!!
