Lets not make this a connection to any club. Every club, community, company has its unwelcome minorities.

People on twitter probabbly dont even mean it in most cases. They just think they cann get away with it because its the internet and get a kick out of it.

It does not matter who the offender supports if they make racist comments on Twitter, to anyone not just celebs, they should be traced and prosecuted. Twitter is just another form of publishing and idiots who think they can't be traced need to be taught a lesson.

I agree, every club has their bell ends and twitter gives them a direct window to vent their spleens on the target of their vitriol

If you can... I think Twitter is an American company isn't it and just making racist comments is not illegal in the US (or I believe in most countries). You can go out on the street and yell obscenities and racist slurs against minorities as loud as you like... you might get beat up, but you won't get arrested.

Not sure if UK gov can subpoena records of IP addresses easily from Twitter, and if they can- if the person turns out to be living overseas, most countries just saying racist things is not illegal.

well i would be surprised if the uk gov couldn't do anything, and say for arguments sake they couldn't because f the us company thing? sure? , it would not do twitter any favours to not be pro active in the fight to eliminate this crap from the web.

There's been plenty of police action from people issuing abuse on twitter in the UK, with sentences including jail terms being handed out, so twitter must be assisting when requested.

Twitter relies on Mutual Legal Assistance Treaties when foreign governments want to subpoena records so the UK government could get involved but chances are the racists in question are British anyway!

  18. Talksport stopped all Twitter activity when the Collymore stuff that Tobes highlighted above happened. They said it would remain that way until Twitter started to do something about it. As far as I know, they still don't use Twitter!

A law student from Newcastle was prosecuted for the racist comments to Stan Collymore, he admitted doing it to celebrities to 'get a reaction'. It's easy to prosecute Twitter users in this country, the fundamental principle for internet-hosted material is that what is illegal offline is also illegal online.
