How has Suarez got on the shortlist ahead of Modders?

I wouldn't expect to see Modric listed but I don't know why Suarez is there!

Also noticed that Wenger is in the coach of the year shortlist....

It's a joke spurfect, Suarez, Forlan and Fabregas all had an average year... Bale, Modric and Rafa had a better 12 months than them, I'm not saying I expected them all to be on the list but when players who haven't had a better 12 months get listed, it's a joke and a p*ss take to the players who've performed well.

    Wenger! <laugh>

What period is this for? If it's based solely on 2011 I don't know why there's European national team managers in there.

    No Scott Parker <grr>

I'm pretty sure it's based over 12 months Schteffen, a calender year more so than a league season.

Completely forgot about Scotty too... Perhaps being a Spurs player excludes you from selection... :/

Ah, only two defenders and a token keeper in there, although Alves doesn't really count and I'm not sure Abidal has been that great, a bit of a gesture to his health problems more than anything, surely.

Oh and Pique is in there. Thiago Motta's been excellent for awhile now, I'm surprised he got overlooked.

It's a joke. Even as a Spurs fan I'll admit van Persie was probably the most lethal striker in 2011 behind Messi and Ronaldo... Vidic and Kompany were rocks for the clubs too, completely forgot about them.

Doesn't RVP have a goal:game ratio of 1+? in the 2011 calendar year?
It actually does not make any sense as to why a footballer with such a prolific strike rate in one of the top leagues in the world does not feature in the player of the year award.
I can't understand why either Fab or Suarez feature. Fab had a pretty sub standard year and Suarez, whilst an incredible footballer, has just not scored enough goals. Parker should have been a shoe in based on the fact he was player of the year. Kompany, Silva and even Tevez had far better years.

Its a stupid competition and the final 3 will be Messi, Ronaldo and whichever Barcelona player the judges pull out of the hat. Probably Iniesta.

i didn't actually expect to see any Spurs players in the list. However, when i saw Suarez i did start to wonder why there weren't any. It can't even be for his "heroics" (read: magnificent save) in the world cup either as that was more than a year ago.

    Kompany has been absolutely outstanding.
I could have filled in for Pique in most of Barca's La Liga matches and he's still made some massive **** ups.

Perhaps they should start off the FFP rules by applying them to this award?
That'd wipe out the current list entirely!

Winner of this years' Copa America, plus Player of the Tournament.

Although I get the feeling he won't be getting too many votes...

Messi will walk it again, wonder if Suarez will fall over and over react when he finds out he hasnt won.

The real question is what he'll say to Abidal or Eto'o when he loses...
