    Landmark Legal Win Stops Newcastle Fans Watching Illegal Streaming Of Matches On Internet & In Pubs

    With so much at stake thanks to the ever increasing revenue from broadcasting rights, it is no surprise that the Premier League is doing everything within its powers to protect that income.

    Going forward, Newcastle United fans and those of other PL clubs, may find it increasingly harder to see NUFC matches via the internet for free.

    The route to do this is by the landmark court ruling forcing the six main UK based Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to block access to one of the largest illegal football streaming sites.

    The High court ruled that ‘First Row’ was acting jointly with third part streaming services to offer the live Premier League matches in breach of the League’s copyright. The music and film industries have used this particularly route to protect copyright but it was the first time a sporting body had.

    A Premier League spokesperson;

    “It’s imperative that content industries are afforded protection under the law if they are to continue investing in the sort of quality talent and facilities that has made tem successful an dof interest in the first place. The judgement recognises the parasitic nature of the enterprise; this was an out and out commercial operation with estimated revenues of up to £10m a year, whilst giving nothing back to the sport. “

    Making clear that it is not just punters sitting home alone watching these sites who will be affected, the ruling has also stated that any pubs using ‘First Row’ to screen Premier League matches would also be breaching copyright.

    The PL spokesperson saying;

    “The Premier League will be significantly upping its enforcement activity in this area in the coming months, so any publican who is being offered a service that is not either BSkyB or Bt Vision should be aware that these are illegal and they open themselves up to the possibility of prosecution.”

    What does the Premier League actually gain by it?

    Most grounds are full or near as to capacity for majority of games anyway.

    The ruling doesn't affect screening via Satellite dishes, so most pubs should be unaffected, unless they were linking into the internet.
    I don't really see how it could or would try and make more fans go to games.

    It comes across as a way of preventing the normal fan of having exposure to games and just being spiteful and even more money grabbing then the PL already is.

    In the case of younger fans, with less exposure to teams it could ultimately lead to less interest in the long term and cost clubs money.

    Plenty of other sites out there, just that some seem to have too much baggage attached, like Sopcast.

    Probably wont affect myself that much, and I may even go to more Gateshead games if they are at home when away matches aren't televised.

    They blocked the Piratebay over here in Ireland last week. One of the strangest workarounds besides proxies was to install the Opera browser and turn on "Turbo Mode" to bypass the ISP block(UPC), it works like a charm.

    It should be amusing them trying to police this to be honest.

    This doesn't mean anything. It just means the URL has been banned by most or all ISP's. There are plenty of proxy servers linking to the domains. Piratebay is an example, there are hundreds or different URL's to bypass you to the site

    It's ridiculous. The people who watch the streams illegally aren't going to start buying tickets. The stadiums are mainly full anyway.

    Thank you for the heads up sir. I will he giving this a try.

    I can't see any way this could be properly enforced, the sites are basic constructs and won't be hard for people to recreate as and when they get blocked. One big game of cat and mouse where I see the cat tiring first

    I love this 'illegal' tag that the Powers That Be have placed on downloads. It's simple, downloading stuff is not illegal and never has been. What is illegal is the publication of copyrighted material which means uploading.

    This includes non-cracked torrent clients because they still send up packets of data to share and then that is when they are illegal. But for the actual downloading of copyrighted material is not breaking any law, civil or criminal, no matter what the authorities try to say or call it.

    The newspapers, often print photographs they have clipped from the internet and then published them. In these cases they are liable for publishing copyright material (and try to get away with it by fobbing off the photographer with a couple of quid afterwards) but, equally, non of the readers of the newspaper are doing anything illegal in 'downloading' the copyright image.

    So, please can we stop calling these downloads as 'illegal' as they are most certainly not and note that not one person has been successfully prosecuted for downloading copyrighted material?

    In the 70s the FA had the bright idea of even stopping Match of the Day on Saturday nights. The thought was that the hunger for football would drive people to to the matches.

    Because it was off the telly the interest fell and the attendances fell even further.

    Never underestimate the power of corporate stupidity.
