Another miss match performance yesterday. Things are improving but we still have a hill to climb.

Is it time to go back to basics, 2001 style!

Lets see what we have. A reliable box to box man in Henderson, a good holding player in Lucas, two quick wingers in Sterling and Markovic. We still lack strikers but if we can get a solid spine we can grind out results.

Sterling and Markovic are players who need freedom to give maximum influence to a game. In a 4231 the wide players do not get that freedom, so currently we do not get that maximum influence. 442 allows wingers a lot more freedom to play. Look at how United have used their wingers over the years.

Lallana is an attacking midfielder who is versatile and can score goals. He has played off the striker many times before, so lets try it again. He also links up great with Lambert.

I think Sterling and lallana are our best bets for goals so lets play to their strengths!

    442?

    Mignolet
    Manquillo Skrtel Toure Moreno
    Markovic Lucas Henderson Sterling
    Lambert Lallana

Should we give this a goal?

We seem to give everyone else goals...

I'd play Borini rather than Lamber for the extra movement. Rodgers won't, of course.

Until the players start playing for the shirt again we could play any formation ans still be ****.

when i think of back to basics i think

    1. consistency of team selection.

    2. hard work and effort

    3. players taking responsibility. I would want forwards signalling where they are running and demanding the right ball... not adjusting themselves mid run and guessing what the other guy is doing. sterling should be using all his energy to run in behind in the right channel and pointing which side of full back to play the ball... then eating the face of the gobshite who fails to supply the ball.

    4. fitness.

so............. I think we lack fitness and stamina, cannot decide who to play or how to play.

I think personally we need to pick a formation to suit the resources and then stick with the players picked.

maybe that is what you've said maybe something else i don't know

    1. Play the diamond.

    2. Play the new signings.

    3. Sterling and Markovic up front.

    4. Can as the DM with Coutinho/Allen and Henderson ahead.

if that was the decision and it was stuck with then ok fine but i can't see it working myself. rodgers would see it as getting himself the sack which is why he's turned to the "seniors" who he feels he can rely on.

    So...

    Migs
    Manquillo - Skrtel - Lovren - Moreno
    Can
    Henderson - Coutinho/Allen
    Lallana
    Markovic Sterling

Leaves Balotelli as the only new signing not playing (injured at the moment anyway).

I suggested OP's team set up a few days ago. It makes sense. It allows wingers space forward, stretches up the opponent, Lallana has a good shot and goal instinct in him.

My edit would be Coutinho for Henderson. Coutinho would function in the Fabregas/modric/Xavi role.

Can's not a DM he's a box to box player. I think playing him as a single DM would be a gigantic risk and not pay off (maybe in a few years though).

I see no reason to drop Lucas. He should keep the spot.

do we know that can is anything... i think he's an unfit butterball due mainly to rodgers inability to manage!

Can can play the DM role - it would be a waste of his ability but he can play it.

Lucas is slow and immobile - any decent team can bypass him, as we saw against Basel. He just looks good because he replaced the worst DM ever, and has played in relatively easy games (bar Real Madrid).

There is a reason why he was dropped in the first place and has hardly featured in around a year.

I think he was dropped because Rodgers wanted to play the diamond and could only fit Gerrard in at DM.

Experience seems to matter little to Jimmy. Stick Can at DM, Henderson at AM, Sterling at S....

There's more goals in Burnley's second 11 than in that team.
