Nicked the idea from another thread. Which famous people went to your school? Says a lot about mine that the most famous alumini were Newsreader Moira Stewart, some bloke who was in Lovejoy and James Hanratty. It's probably not a bad argument against faith schools
Only two that I can think of, and they are no longer with us. Freddie Bunce, Watford footballer 1955 -1963. Slightly better known, Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou, or George Michael.
I initially couldn't think of anyone and so I cheated and googled it. Apparently Kyla La Grange (a singer I've barely heard of), Nick Stringer (Rugby International) and Adam Godley (an actor I've never heard of) all went there. But, by far the most famous, NZHorn was there a couple of years before me.
You beat me to it!. I was going to say that the most famous person from my school was Cologne. I think I played rugby with Nick Stringer, either him or his brother. He was a couple of years younger than me.
Even though he was born a couple of months before I took my GCSEs, a certain WFC fan by the name of Steve Finn went there. On the other side, in my 1st year there Nick Leeson was in the Upper 6th - I keep that quiet here, given that I work in the finance industry. In terms of football, former WFC player Jordan Parkes and current Swansea player Tom Carroll went there. Unfortunately, one of the Hillsborough 96 was in the year above me at school - I knew him vaguely as a friend of his was the brother of one of my friends, The 6th form building that was built while I was there is named after him.
No famous alumni from my school that I could find. I remember at final assembly being told by the Year Master that not only were we the last full intake (to complete the standard five years in its form) but also the worst they've ever had. Life affirming stuff to tell a bunch of 15/16 year olds about to take their GCE's and CSE's. Gave me a determination to give him a big "UP YOURS" in life. Didn't quite manage it but I know I've achieved more than he was going to give me credit for in life for sure.
Met my old headmaster a few years ago and told him what I was doing. Given he probably assumed I would be sweeping streets, and stacking shelves or slopping out in the scrubs he was a bit taken aback. I was invited to his funeral last year - and declined...
Terry Scott, the comedian, and I apparently strolled through the same cloisters - or, more likely in my case, slunk... Also, not a former pupil, but former sports master - Stanley Rous, who consigned many a boy to the horrors of having their bums patted by sports teachers of dubious sexuality by changing the school's official sport from football to rugby. Not that I was there at the same time as either.
Sir Michael Balcon, Head of Ealing Film Studios for many years. Any of you old enough to remember 'Dixon of Dock Green'? George Dixon was so named after the school.
One of our old Boys, a certain Jonathan Bond attended my school, a long time after I left though. If I recall we had a number of other famous people...Graham Greene (author) being the most notable
They stopped it when Z Cars became popular in Hertfordshire. I was in the same class as Winston Churchill
You do have to wonder, don't you? I had four fantastic teachers (excluding sports) during my time at school, one of whom gave me private maths lessons (she was my junior school form teacher prior to becoming a maths teacher at another school I didn't attend) before I took my GCE's. My school put me in a maths class above my ability, an English class below my ability, refused to let me take Photography as it was not to O Level and forced me to give up TD... ironic given what I do now for a living! Addendum: My point being that some in authority during our formative years like to take credit where it's not due and really probably don't realise the damage they do do. I had very little time for the heads, nor their deputies, the longer I stayed in school. Still don't, even now that they're gone.
