I spotted this and it got me thinking... did you boo him or did people near you boo?
I didn't tbh and clapped him.

Demba Ba Sends Message To Newcastle Fans After Match

The return of Demba Ba with Chelsea was thankfully overshadowed in the days leading up to the match by the excitement of our new signings and the first half display, in particular, against Villa.

(To feature like Joe, send in your letters/articles for the magazine/website to [email protected])

Only when the usual pre-match media stuff kicked off on Friday did the Ba angle get a lot of coverage.

Some of the nationals predictably were talking up Ba having to run a gauntlet of hate and other nonsense but to no great surprise our ex-striker was met by a mixture of applause, boos and maybe the silent majority like me, who sat there in…silence.

I’m not going to clap an ex-player when he plays for another team against us, apart from in the most extreme of circumstances.

Maybe the most extreme was the brilliant David Kelly who really bonded with the fans and arguably saved Newcastle from relegation to the third tier and possibly the end of the club as we knew it. Kelly came on as a substitute for the mackems and we clapped him onto the pitch,

Demba Ba was a class act on the pitch for eighteen months but that is all he was, a well paid player who did a very good job, however he was always a player on the verge of leaving and he left, he never got under our skin.

Should we hate him though? Why would you want to do that?

    Just after midnight Demba Ba sent out the following to his Twitter followers;

“I thanks all the real fans for the nice messages i receive. And to all the haters….may god bless you!!! ;- good night”.

To be honest I’m embarrassed at any Newcastle fans who would send hate messages to Ba.

A player who gave his all on the pitch…what more do you want?

Look at the long line of players who took fortunes out of the club and gave next to nothing back, I’ll start the list here and feel free to add; Viduka, Barton, Smith, Geremi, Boumsong, Marcelino, Goma, Domi, Luque, Owen….

Sending messages of hate? Morons. It was a no brainer for the lad. Did a good job for us. I was the silent yesterday, he wasn't around long enough to get the big applause. Booing is reserved for knob ends like Bellers who slag off the club and fans.

It depends on the player and why they left, Owen for example I hate
And would boo him till the cows come home.

The likes of speed,Robbie lee I would clap I even remember Ferdinand scoring a consolation goal for Leicester And was actually clapped too

when we played Southampton john beresford came of the bench for Southampton At sjp the place went mental, cheering, clapping singing his name then as soon as he touched the ball he got an all mighty boo, great times

Most fans were indifferent. I didn't mind the booing to put him off, but the "one greedy bastard" chants were silly.

I wasn't at the match, but if I had been, I wouldn't have booed or clapped him. I would have just made more noise when he missed, fell over, got intimate with Colo's toe etc.

Bit of a no brainer really, if somebody offers more to a tradesman to do the same job he's doing for another company he's more than likely going to accept the offer isn't he?

The guy did a job for us when he was here and he doesn't owe us anything. He's moved on and so should we.

Seems like decent fella and good to see he's not getting drawn into silly spats. Thanking the real fans and wishing God will bless the haters is a good comeback. What can the fools say to that without looking doubly foolish?

I've only ever booed ex players who have left in a storm, or slated the club/fans/city after leaving. Ba does not fit that bill. Equally, he didn't make legendary status that would warrant a unanimous cheer every time he returns.

The odd boo, if tongue in cheek to put him off, is ok and typical banter. But the few who booed when he was taken off with a broken nose need their heads testing.

I clapped him and cheered him, even louder when others around me booed.

I think it's utterly pathetic that the only people our fans ever clap are the ones who make "downwards steps" because they aren't good enough. I bet Alan Smith would get a rapturous welcome if he ever got an FA cup tie against us, and to me that's farcical. Guthrie's the same as well... Why the hell are people clapping him? Because good ol' Danny isn't a threat to us playing for little ol' Reading? Because he wasn't good enough to take a massive payday and a "step up" in terms of club?

Demba Ba is an extremely talented player and I count it among the greatest of pleasures I could see him play in black and white.

Having said all that, it was nice Demba didn't score and I waved him off the pitch and laughed at his nose hanging off his face... It's just funny <ok>

To me it's not about whether a player takes a step up or own (which in itself is a matter of opinion), but about the overall contribution to the club. Demba had a decent spell here and scored vital goals, but not long enough for me to regard him as a Toon legend. Another season or two of top scoring for us and then maybe, yes.

A player could go to Man City to quadruple their wages, or to Sunderland, or some non league team and I'd still cheer them if they had been a legend here. <ok>

To me, I don't even care about legendary status in that way. At least I don't hold some strictly quantifiable terms by which a player receives the honour he'll never know about. I got BA on my shirt knowing full well he would leave at some point in the future, because I wanted his name and number in my collection as he's one of the players I think is worth remembering.

The many goals he scored, the chants, the smile on his face when he was playing for us, the strawberry syrup, the time he was upended in the Gallowgate box and was lying on the floor laughing his head off... All things I won't forget.

The next one I'll be getting is Tiote, and then Stevie Taylor. Problem is I might have to get used shirts soon because I won't want a Wonga one!

Come off it Gandalf, we all know you got BA on your shirt because you're a skinflint and thought you'd save a few coppers.

Should've got 49, cos then you could rip off the 9, and add a few letters yourself to make CABAYE 4...

<laugh> That's recession thinking right there... You should be a financial adviser... Which reminds me, I have a PPI claim to make, and I've just been soooooooooooooo lazy I haven't bothered filing it yet... Hopefully some nice young man will ring me up today whilst my trousers are round my ankles and take me through my claim, because I know of no other way I could handle this whole drama <ok>

    Ba owes us NOTHING !!

why should he not move to a bigger club , on more wages ?!!!

We got him on a free. he done a job for us. got us into europe

I wouldnt applaud Ba , but certainly wouldnt boo him for all his effort and goals for newcastle

Players like Owen definitely deserved to get booed
