What is the purpose of transfer windows?

According to tradition its to prevent big clubs being able to buy their way out of an injury crisis.

Maybe it does a little... but usually it is the little club which has less reliable backup that gets hurt more by the rule.

In many ways the xfer windows do little more than escalate the cost to hire players. The limited timeframes cause teams to have to splurge more than they may feel comfortable to in order to get someone before window closes...

... January window is huge example of this. I suspect if the January window were not so short it wouldn't cause so many super high cost silly buys.

Short transfer windows artificially inflate transfer fees and cause teams to take financial gambles.

I really think they should be done away with. Perhaps instead have a no sign period in march through may. Or have a rule a team can not add more than 5 players to their first team squad in a calendar year (to prevent flush teams going crazy mid year to get that one higher spot).

More radical idea... what if there were no transfer windows and players could not be tied down to a contract lasting more than one season?

example of what happens when the bes tpotential part of someone runs down their mothers leg!

    ..........................

trasfer windows don't exist in the championship.. makes no difference..... the transfer window really only applies to european football as you have to register squads, its the only reason to bother with one. IMO clubs who do business early are wise.... i utterly fail to see why most clubs don't follow the example of utd and cheslea who bought early i nthe window.

i can see some need to sell to buy and some play brinkmanship to get the best price but we've seen tottenham for exmaple play the deadline day game for most years... its not precisely the best way to do business.
