Looks like distinct phases:

Pre 1950 very little inter country transfers.
50-70 handful of transfers each year.
70-90 frequent transfers. Fairly steady.
After 90 rapid exponential growth each year.

 

£2bn a year! We could have developed personal jet packs or a pill to make your knob twice as big (not that I need that....) if we'd have pumped that money into science and technology. Or a ciggie that is good for your cardio-respiratory system.
