A big night on Tuesday, with Bolton W at Bristol Rovers and Wrexham away to Reading. Surely it’s time to start Gilbert ahead of Berry, and replace the cumbersome flat footed Leaburn with Godden.
Crawley are very poor this season. A few draws at home and one win in recent months. This should be a decisive victory for Charlton, but I'll take any kind of win right now.
I'd go even further and say it's a game we must win. We have to stop relying on our excellent defence, even to score the goals.
Surely with Crawley being a poor side it’s an ideal time to see what Gilbert can do ? Agree Godden and Gilbert to start ahead of Leaburn and Berry - it’s a no brainer
I’ve been pleasantly surprised by Godden and awfully disappointed in Leaburn. I’m not sure what has happened there. The win is paramount.
The Stockport manager said post-match that when he saw that the ref was letting shirt-tugging and wrestling go he told his CB's to be all over Leaburn.
Strange this season that shirt tugging is now OK as long as it isn't "sustained". Shirt-pulling is always intentional. You can't do it by accident. But now intent appears to be OK as long as your shirt tugs are fairly brief. It's this kind of silly thinking that discredits refereeing and makes life harder for refs at all levels, who get no respect anyway. I imagine there are knuckle-dragging defenders at grass roots level who now berate referees because the shirt-pulling they have just conceded a penalty for was not sustained enough.
Big game tonight (they all are now) and we really need the three points. My concern is do we have goals in us?
We don’t score anywhere near enough goals from open play, and this will be our undoing in the end. Gillesphey is our most potent goal threat in recent weeks.
Our build-up is not quick enough, we give defenders time to get back and double up on TC and Small, so that when we eventually get near the box teams have everyone back. We simply are not capable of playing through the middle. When we get over the halfway line we stop building and hit hopeful balls forward. The only midfielder who looks like scoring is Berry, and he's missed a few recently. I can understand why Anderson came on on Saturday, it was a physical battle, but surely Gilbert has to get more game time, a start even.
Honest question (as I haven't watched the team this season); If we are struggling so much to score, how have the lads won 8 of their last 11 games? I see only Wrexham & Birmingham have conceded fewer than us.
