It has been a real pleasure to follow the Gills to away games and be part of their away breaking record ( even if it was fairly tortuous at York and Exeter ) BUT I shall court controversy and say that I won't be too upset if the undefeated run comes to an end ! We have 5 away games left. I feel that we need to be 'selective' as to which ones are played 'for a draw' e.g. Burton - but I would rather see us attack the more winnable games and get two wins ( 6 points ) and lose the other three ( trying to win them ), than to play to stay undefeated in all the games, achieving only 5 points ! You may say that we should be able to win at least 3 of those 5 away games, and I would agree - but since the Southend & Bristol Rovers games in early January we have really only played for a point at the subsequent away games. That tactic has served us well - but I believe that the 'extra' point in my equation would be better than continuing to play for 'just' a point.
Agree fully there alwaysright. 2x wins & 2x defeats is always better than 4x draws. But, I think MA is now fully setting us up to not lose first, and to hopefully sneek one at the other end. And the way things are going, I don't mind that at all. So long as we do nick the odd win, all is good. In one other respect it is a good idea to have the draws rather than win/lose. That being that we fans all seem to get suicidal if we lose
judging by the amount of negativity from some, whilst we have been top of the league - I imagine that there might be a bloodbath the next time we are in a relegation battle.
'Night of the Long Knives' 'eh Alwaysright ? Reminds me of some of the beastly behaviour by so called fans in Stimmo's last, and Hessie's first ( return ) season.
Old Timer in Cyprus You obviously understand what I mean when I say that it's just as well that we are all so jolly whilst our team is top of the league. People need to smile a bit more - things could be worse ! Of course the punchline to this is that we must have done a lot of smiling in the past - as, indeed, things were worse.
It's all about expectation, when in the Championship people weren't expecting us to do more than survive and if we did they were happy, in league 2 people expect promotion as a minimum requirement and get nervous every time we drop a point.
Agree there too grumpygit. I somehow think our brilliant start to the season raised our expectations too high. If we had started fairly well (rather than brilliantly), and were say, around 3rd or 4th by the end of November. Our run since then (W8 D5 L4) would have us probably still around 3rd and I reckon we would all be talking up our chances, rather than looking around nervously. It is what is happening over at Vale. They started great just like us, and despite being in administration and just enjoying playing well, they all think/thought they had a god-given right to carry on and walk the league. It hasn't quite turned out like that. And I'm just glad we are still picking up points where they are not. Their fans truly are suicidal, despite being top 3 all year and out of admin. Expectations eh? Who'd have them?
