Away advantage?

OK! After the first few football games having been played in empty stadia, I am beginning to think that there is now no such thing as home advantage...indeed, I think it might be home disadvantage. The logic of this is that when one plays at home, one gets a boost from the noise of fans and a general positive feel. Now, the loss of the crowd gives a totally different feel for the home team, while the away team, who have little support, are more in the expected environment. Also, the only other home advantage is knowing the pitch....but if the crowd variations give one a general pitch positioning, then that advantage is lost too. What do people think?

The FailonLine think we will be disadvantaged home and away due to the fervour of our support in both cases.

However they also named 2 completely different 11's we could put out and didn't include Whyte or Cunningham in either. Or any youngsters .

At least the ref's and lino's won't have to put up with the abuse normally shown to them by BfB. Words such as you bald tw*t and blind bat come to mind.

The fact is that teams on average win more at home than away but in my opinion that’s nothing to do with the venue but the usual football factors: quality of players, tactics and the rub of the green.

It’s psychological more than anything.

There's no doubt refs and especially linos are influenced by the home venue crowd - especially if they're a "big club" - like Leeds.....

They also said that Cardiff will be 'badly handicapped' by having no supporters inside the ground. So Leeds, West Brom, Derby County and the rest of the clubs won't be?

What will be advantageous will be the training, preparation, tactics and match fitness. I just hope our boys hit the ground running.

That's probably for two reasons Nin.

1. Because we're not a "big club".

2. Warnock pissed so many of them off and they've got long memories.

That;s really my point Aber. Eintracht Frankfurt, who cannot usually win a one-ticket raffle away from home, romped home in their last two (away) games and drew the home one!!!!

Yeah I've tried watching without crowd but I just can't do it....... But I've like you say looked at the results and there's a bit of a pattern emerging.

I watched a bit of the first few German games but although I quite enjoyed them I struggled to watch the whole 90 and then lost interest quite quickly and haven’t seen any more.

defo boring as fk without an atmosphere, so whats clear from this situation is football needs its fans more than the fans need football.

Got to be honest, personally I believe the main reasons behind home advantage (if such a thing truly exists) are familiarity of surroundings and playing surface and the crowds ability to influence officials and occasionally get to opposing players.

Conversely though, I also believe crowds can negatively impact the home team with moans, groans and singling individual home players out for abuse (which our lot seem VERY capable of doing on a frequent basis).

Be interesting to see how things pan out but it's sure as feck gonna be dull watching the games without us there.

I've also seen reports that players are spending less time messing about with time wasting and theatrics, so maybe some good can come out of this god awful situation and mess.
