Perhaps some reality for those on here that think we can compete with the bigger, better funded clubs in this league. Our gate receipts will be nowhere near 6 or 7 of these clubs, thus our spending power is diminished. Being a top 10 club in this league is a good effort if you ask me.
Who knows, if the actual tootball was more exciting we might get more people through the turnstiles ? Plus all those teams with the exception of Preston, Plymouth, Oxford and us have been in the top flight since we were last there in the late 1970's
If we were playing well and winning games-Ashton Gate would be sold out most games. We are getting decent crowds for poor football.
I think we used to average about 15,000 in the old 2nd Division. The average in our first season in Division 1 was about 27,000 - 28,000 believe. We had huge crowds for the home games against Leeds and Liverpool during the FA Cup run of 1974 and got close to 40,000 for both games.
I’m afraid that Bristol City fans are quite fickle. They will stay away if they don’t like the football style - or are prejudiced against the manager and stay away for some kind of ‘protest’. Northern fans support their team no matter what. They win together and lose together. Sadly, we don’t. We only turn up when we’re winning or there’s a big name club in opposition.
That’s a bit harsh, if we just turned up when we were winning we’d never turn up. Northern fans wouldn’t put up with the level of success we have had over the years.
