Just read this piece where AVB dumps on the mad Russian. Shows he has a bit of pride in himself, not an overblown ego like some people. http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/s...las-boas:-roman-abramovich-quit-on-me?cc=3436 Thoughts?
I'm certainly no fan of the Russian Gangster. I dislike just about everything he is. As far as AVB goes, only time will tell. My main concern about his time at Chelsea was his apparent total lack of man-management skills. Yes, he had a certain amount of animosity directed against him by the little clique of the old guard, but his answer seemed to be direct confrontation, rather than any attempt at negotiation. Of course as the boss, your word has to be the final say. But, as any successful boss will tell you, you achieve far more with a happy workforce, who are behind you, rather than than one that you are in direct confrontation with. I have already expressed my concerns over his appointment elsewhere on this site. I sincerely hope that I'm proved wrong, and that those fears are allayed, but as I say, for me, the jury is most definitely still out.
Maybe getting onside with his new supporter base by having a pot shot at his former employer. Nothing like poking out your tongue and running behind your gate is there.
I thought that that was pretty obivious, RA wanted change but then let the old guard get to him. Chavski's CL win was no more than a pyrrhic victory, the extent of detrimental consequences will become clear in the near future, probably sometime in the next couple of seasons. I wonder how much RA is going to have pay to employ a manager capable of carrying out the necessary cull and consequent rebuilding. It should be interesting, I expect the Chavs to implode prior to any rebuilding taking place.
I am sceptical BUT I am desperate to be proved wrong! I am looking forward to have to create or contribute to an "I was wrong" thread about AVB. NB happy about the Freund appointment though, didn't notice any ITKs, pundits or sports "journalists" see that one coming!
If its any consolation I was reading the Beebs gossip section earlier and I reckon just about every story was fantasy or absolute bollocks. So any story about Modric,Rafa etc is rubbish until proven otherwise.
My major concern with AVB (judging by his Chav days) is his apparent tactical ineptitude. The tactics he used at Porto did not work for the Chavs. Will they work any better for us? Does AVB have the ability to learn from his mistakes and adapt his tactics to suit the EPL? None of us will know until the first few games of the new season.
Very true. The hacks of the Red Tops pick whatever they want to hear from any statement or story. AVB was asked if Modric was definitely leaving, he said No, not necessarily, only if an offer comes that is acceptable to the player and to Spurs. But of course, those guys don't want to hear that. So the story reads, " Modric leaving Spurs" the fact that he wants CL football, not to mention, more money is not exactly news.
or maybe he is just being totally honest about his feelings? he was prompted about his former job so gave a reply that was reasonable to his emotions with regards it. from what i have heard and read....he was gagged from talking about his Chelsea experience...and i can believe that since they were still paying his wage up until we got him....once that link was broken..AVB said his piece.
i dont think he necceserily does. but give him credit...he has an insight into personalities far deeper and hands on than we do. it is quite possible that a few disgruntled moans are coming from VDV..and i can believe that if it is true...the Dutch can be of that ilk..just look at the national squad. im not saying it is true..i like VDV much..hope he is with us for a long time..however if the manager thinks that he needs someone who can give more than 60/70 minutes each match etc and will not moan in a disruptive manner..then VDV may not be that man. if we are going to back the new man then we must back his decisions..some may have to be big ones..and overall i feel comfortable with the way he is approaching things..even his interviews..i wouldnt say his plan is to get the fans onside..even though that is very important....i think he is just being honest and insightful about his approach to the game...his speech seems quite meaningful..and slightly more enthusiaitic than what Harry would come out with who always sounded fed up and that rubbed me up the wrong way a bit at times..so im happy with the freshness surrounding WHL.
My suspicion is that VDV had something in his contract that guaranteed him a start (if fit) for each league game, and that he'd be in charge of free-kicks. There were times during last season when VDV ought not to have started, and he certainly isn't consistent enough to be our main-stay dead-ball specialist. I further suspect that with AVB coming in and having just bought Sigurdsson (his first signing), he will be making it clear to VDV that there is no guarantee that he will start every, or indeed, any match, nor will he be hogging the free-kicks, and that that will have stung VDV. Assuming any of that is correct, my vote is with AVB (to whom I am warming with each passing day).
VDV has stated that he didn't like working under mourinho because he was too tactically minded. I suspect he will have the same problem with AVB. Harry was as laid back as they come - one guy said on twitter that when he was at the training ground he used to just stand around talking to other staff rather then actually doing anything with the players most the time
The jury is out, and I'll support AVB. Naturally I'm worried about VDV, Modric and Ade, among other things. From the beginning it smelled like Bale and Ade staying, and VDV and Modric going, but only Bale is settled. If VDV does leave I'm thinking it's partly because he doesn't like AVB's style. But: you can make a case for getting rid of everyone who doesn't want to be here. In the long run, I'm encouraged, on balance, especially by the Vertonghen signings. The way to build a top team is from back to front, and I wouldn't trade A-E Vertongehn Kabuoul Walker for anyone.
I will support AVB as I don't see the point of sticking the knife in...I hope I'm wrong but I think it's a ****ing awful appointment...it's got Ramos written all over it!
Well England and Portugal share the same saint so at least we have something in common before we start. Seriously I don't see Ramos completely here Colin although I see where you're coming from. Ramos very quickly won the league in Spain as did AVB in Portugal and both were noted by English teams and were recruited but Ramos came mid season and not at the start which I think makes the difference a bit. Neither were given long enough in their positions to make the right impact. Let's face it 4 months at a team just isn't enough is it?. Ramos had no experience in the PL and AVB has and can speak English whereas Ramos couldn't. AVB now has a better squad to work with than Ramos and I too am beginning to feel better about the situation.
AVB also has more control when it comes to transfers, rather than having Comolli bring in a random bunch of players with no view on any kind of tactics or style of play.
I'm with you 100% on this mate. I've gone on record saying 'Arry should've had at least one more season to earn that new contract he was after. I do hope however to be proven wrong and will (then) happily take any flack from the ever increasing AVB band wagon.
