http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/fo...jects-lucrative-post-at-Paris-St-Germain.html Exclusive: Tottenham Hotspur head coach Andre Villas-Boas rejects lucrative post at Paris St-Germain Andre Villas-Boas has turned down the chance to become the new head coach of Paris St-Germain and will stay at Tottenham Hotspur, who have appointed Franco Baldini as their new director of football. PSG are believed to have offered Villas-Boas a three-year contract, which would have placed him among the three highest-paid managers in world football, as well as unlimited transfers funds. Baldiniâs appointment, a deal that was agreed earlier this week and will be announced imminently, has also helped persuade Villas-Boas to stay as he has a strong relationship with the Italian, who recently left Roma and is regarded as one of the best football administrators in Europe. Villas-Boas has been urging Spurs to recruit Baldini since he arrived at the club and chairman Daniel Levy has always liked the European model of a head coach and director of football. It remains to be seen how much control over transfers Levy now cedes in the new set-up. Villas-Boas will now hope that Spurs push ahead with strengthening their squad so that they can challenge for honours next season and that ambition has also made him decide to stay. According to sources close to Villas-Boas he is extremely grateful to Spurs and Levy for the opportunity they gave him last summer, after he was sacked by Chelsea after only a few months, and does not want to be regarded as a coach who changes clubs every season. He does want to show loyalty to Spurs where he has two more years left on his current deal and where he is settled and happy. Villas-Boas is, nevertheless, extremely keen for the club to back his judgment in the transfer market having missed out on a series of first-choice targets including Joao Moutinho, Oscar, Willian and Leandro Damiao despite deals appearing to be in place. The head coach is therefore hoping to make the Brazilian international Paulinho his first signing of what could be an exciting summer of transfer activity for Spurs. Talks have taken place with Paulinhoâs club, Corinthians, and an official offer is expected soon of at least £15 million for the 24-year-old box-to-box midfielder who is currently starring in Brazilâs Confederations Cup campaign. Villas-Boas is also keen to improve Spursâ forward line and has held discussions over acquiring David Villa from Barcelona. It is understood that the 31-year-old Spanish international would like to come to the Premier League and is enthusiastic about joining Spurs. Villas-Boasâ decision to stay is a severe blow to PSG who were willing to activate the £10 million release clause in his contract and wanted to appoint him as Carlo Ancelottiâs successor. Ancelotti is set to take over at Real Madrid and PSG had identified Villas-Boas as the ideal candidate. Extensive talks have been held with Villas-Boasâs agent Carlos Goncalves over the past few days. PSG have struggled to find a successor for Ancelotti, who will trigger his release from his contract. The wealthy French clubâs Qatari owners would have ideally liked to employ Arsène Wenger but he has pledged to honour his contract at Arsenal, while another potential target, Jose Mourinho, has taken over at Chelsea. Interestingly, PSG wanted to offer Villas-Boas a three or even a four-year contract which would suggest that they are finally giving up on the hope that Wenger will join them next summer. Wenger is entering the last year of his current contract at Arsenal and the club want to offer him a new deal.
Good for AVB, if all is as reported. Levy needs now to return the confidence shown by AVB and back him in the transfer market. I'm sure he will and we will be able to look forward to an exciting season ahead. It also would appear to confirm that Bale is staying as AVB would surely have made a different decision if he were leaving.
Well its up to Levy to back his man. This could be a first but old form doesn't give you confidence . Lets hope he is not saddled with another bunch of squad players.
All promising enough if true, lets hope we can get a few things done soon so we can get the ball rolling for the new season. A new kit would be a nice way to start after the fixtures come out today...
Apparently it's Capello who's taking over at PSG now anyway. I'm sure they'll be playing exciting football next season..... Apparently Baldini won't be officially announced until early July, and nor will any transfers for that matter. I don't know why, it's just what I've read. (i'll put that last bit in the transfer thread too)
Baldini's apparently on holiday but still being kept in the loop on things and also getting his ideas across at the same time. I'm pretty sure Doria's link to us would have something to do with Baldini.
For crying out loud. Surely the two most important times for a DoF are the summer and january? He's got **** all to do the rest of the year, he can go on holiday then. Not a great start if that is true.
He hasn't been appointed yet. Probably not released till July. Hopefully the first window will be done with targets he already has signed up.
Does anyone else think that Baldini will be announced at the same time as a couple of shiny new signings? Probably after the Confed Cup is finished? That's what's in my mind...
Chill Winston, everyone's allowed a holiday, even over paid prima-donnas lol. Like I said, there's so called talk saying he is technically working while on holiday. Probably why we've been linked with a number of Brazilians as he got a couple while at Roma I believe. There's no way we'd have been linked with Doria otherwise in my opinion.
Seeing as how we've got L'Arse away third game of the season, it bloody needs to happen - we need all our boys fitted in for a proper pre-season and firing on all cylinders for then!
September, October, November, December, February, March, April, May. By my street maths that is 2/3 of the year that he could easily go on holiday without having to ruin his holiday by working or compromise his working by being on holiday. He better be on holiday in Brazil, watching the Confed cup and talking to players. If that is his holiday then fair enough. Would you be happy if players went on holiday during the season? Surely its the same thing
that is oooooh so true.... and don't we all know it! but for once, I AM optimistic that we will do some good business in this window, and we will have a good start to the season. ** bet that worries people though doesn't it! **
Baldini's job can pretty much be done anywhere in the world to an extent. Bale can't be in Japan and score a hat trick in the NLD at WHL. Where as Baldini can be in Australia and get negotiations started for a player in Brazil.
Its not ideal is it though? If he is on the phone to them and suddenly Wenger, for example, turns up in person then it hardly puts us in the driving seat. I see the DoF a bit like one of the account men from Mad Men. He needs to be there wining, dining and shmoozing.
I too am quite optimistic if I'm honest. With Baldini's appointment (even if not officially announced) I highly doubt we'd have appointed the bloke if we weren't intent on bringing in a number of players.
To be honest, the person in the driving seat is the one who makes the biggest bid first and foremost, which I think initially comes down to Levy anyway. So unless Levy makes an acceptable offer for anyone, Baldini can't really do much bar scout players and make preliminary negotiations with interested parties. I see what you're saying though, it would be more ideal if Baldini was present here now and ready to rock 'n' roll on something.
