OK, it's been a quiet week for QPR news so I thought we could do with a new thread to discuss all things Austin.

Did anyone on this forum own one of these?

Yes, the mighty (or in most cases not so mighty) Austin Allegro!

I remember my Grandparents owning a couple of these. When I was about ten years old I remember going out in my Grandparents brown Allegro just like the one above. It was a hot sunny day and we set off from the Peabody estate in Dalgarno Gardens. We got near the Goldhawk Road and it started to overheat.

My Granddad opened up the bonnet to discover the fan belt had snapped. Anyway he did an awesome temp repair job. He asked my Nan to remove her stretchy brown tights and used them as a makeshift fan belt. Anyway it worked a treat and we got back to Dalgarno Gardens without issue.

Anyway my Granddad loved his Allegro despite it very often breaking down. It added to the fun in a way. A trip down the coast would be much more of an adventure. The suspense of not knowing weather you would make the trip without a breakdown added to the excitement.

Look, they even tried to make the Austin Allegro look cool<laugh>

The fan belt bit did actually happpen. I remember my Nan not being best pleased about having to give my Granddad her tights to make a fan belt.

I think I learnt some of my 1st swearwords from Nan that day<laugh>
