What is the most important quality in a football manager in your opinion? I suggest some options below, pick ONE, or produce your own reason, and tell us why. We can all list suitable managerial qualities but for the purposes of this thread stick to just one please, the most important one. Suggestions, in no particular order: 1. Tactical Nous. 2. Ability to 'pick' a player. 3. Experience of the Premier League 4. Media Savy 5. Former Player 6. International Experience 7. Ability to Communicate 8. Luck! 9. Sense of Humour 10.Market ability for Transfers. OK there is few to pick from or you can come up with your own.
There'll all important, obviously, but I'd have to go with number 7. If you can't communicate well, then none of the other abilities matter. I've worked with some extremely intelligent people with excellent ideas that have failed horribly because of their lack of people skills.
The requirements to be a Football Manager in 2015... OS: Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8. Processor: Intel Pentium 4, Intel Core, AMD Athlon - XP: 1.6GHz+ V/7/8: 2.2GHz+ Memory: 1 GB RAM. Graphics: NVidia GeForce FX 5900 Ultra, ATI Radeon 9800, Intel GMA X3100 - 128MB VRAM. DirectX: Version 9.0c. Hard Drive: 3 GB available space.
I'm sorry, but we're going to have to let you go, Mr Manager. What did you do wrong? Nothing really, but you no longer meet the minimum specs. Bye!
1, 7 & 8 for me, much better to be lucky than funny! Picking players is a skill too, but maybe more important is to be able to pick the right staff around you, because if the scouts and coaches are good at their jobs then that makes it easier to do your job
7 Communication would cover the ability to motivate, lead, inspire, cajole, nuture etc - and whatever else it takes to get the best from players individually and collectively.
How about Knowledge of Sports' Science Admittedly you only need to know enough about that to know that it matters and to choose the right person to make sure that the right things happen in diet, ttaining and preparation.
No it doesn't (cheat! ) As PNP has already said you can have all those skills but not be able to communicate, or on the other hand, have the ability to communicate (like me) but have nothing relevant to communicate. You then have to rely on bullshit which to be fair Luke you and I are both good at.
Number 2 Ability to pick a player. I'll go for that, on the basis that if you can gather a good team together the rest will take care of itself. Footballers if they are good enough will do it for you if you put them together in the right way.
Because choosing the right tactics and making the right tactical changes at key points in matches can be the difference, whilst we may not like Mourinho, he seldom gets his tactics wrong in the matches that count, whereas some of our recent managers have been fine with plan A, but when that's not working they have been unable to change it.
