Cannot believe Villa are going for OGS. How on earth does his CV rack up against Brendan Rogers or Paul Lambert? I have a bit of bias because of this sickening fashion of not appointing British coaches to top jobs, but surely if OGS is appointed it is simply crazy. Is somebody going to say that winning the Norwegian Premier League is anywhere near the achievement of keeping Norwich and Swansea in the Premiership? Crazy!
The worst thing Randy ever did was to put Mcliesh in charge. The fans couldn't have been more vocal against him right from the start. I hope owners of other clubs learn from his mistake. It was like us giving the City job to Brain Laws.
Brendan rodgers wouldnt have been an option anyway, hes turned down the chance to speak to liverpool so dont think villa would have appealed to him
I would suggest that Aston Villa are now deamed a No No club with managers especially ones who have a job. Why would Rodgers and Lambert want to leave for Aston Villa ? Villa may have to look at the names we are looking at sometime soon. I thought Mcleish did a fair job with the poor squad he had left after the sales of Downing and Young which came after Barry and Milner were sold on.
Villa is one of those teams that could be good & a manager from somewhere else or lower leagues could make a real name for themselves, same as Pardew at Newcastle. A lot of people thought they'd struggle this year, i'm surprised Curbishley doesn't go there. Soon he's going to be at point where nobody wants him as he's been out of the game for too long.
I work with a Villa fan Tickles. Trust me when i tell him you think Mcliesh did a fair job,you had better go into hiding !
From afar, it's not so much the results he got with Villa more the way he went about the job. But then what did they expect - he was incredibly defensive at Brum as well. They shouldve known what they were getting.
Villa's problem is their depth. With a fully fit squad they don't look half bad: ---------------------Given-------------------- ------Hutton---Dunne---Collins/Clark---Warnock --------------------Petrov--------------------- ---Albrighton---------Ireland----------N'Zogbia-- -------------Bent---------Agbonlahor---------- After that though they're bloody awful, with the likes of the practically unheard of Daniel Johnson and Enda Stevens providing backup. The thing is, good-quality players coming in are expected to play - It must be tough to bring players in when they know they're likely to be a sub with the the exception of injuries/suspensions.
From a Villa fan ? yeah ok...LOL. He kept them up ffs. What more do deluded Villa fans want.? If Brendan Rodgers can say no to Liverpool then Villa have no chance. OGS would be mad to go there imo. Villa may have a better chance of Clodagh Rodgers(70's singer) in as manager.
I've wanted Villa to go down for a decade, and they've come so close on a couple of occasions only to survive by the skin of their teeth. Damn them.
From the starting 11 I've posted above, I think it's quite reasonable to want higher than 16th, 2 points clear of relegation. It'll also enhance their frustration hugely after looking like a team that could consecutively finish in the top 6 a few seasons ago. Oh, and they've received around £62m for Downing, Barry, Milner and Young, along with receiving Stephen Ireland as part of the Milner deal. That money has not been re-invested well at all, and that'll just further their frustration even more.
I don't understand why everyone's praising Rodgers as if he's the next best thing. Apart from Swansea his managerial career has been poor, with Swansea he's got promoted via the play-offs and kept them up in their first season. Based on that Phil Brown should be in the running for the Liverpool/Villa jobs. In time he might prove to be an excellent manager but at present he's hugely over valued to be touted for those jobs.
Although I agree with your general point, your argument isn't fair. Phil Brown got us promoted but after the first few months of the season, failed miserably for the rest of our time up there. Rodgers has guided Swansea to an 11th placed finish playing whilst maintaining a beautiful style of football. Huge difference.
To be fair to Villa fans 2 years ago under Martin O'Neill Villa were up there in the top few places and they've had to endure a miserable season. It's perfectly understandable why they're pissed off and they have a right to expect better. They're not gonna be title contenders, but they should be top half at least with their squad and resources. As for OGS, I expected him to stay in Norway for a bit longer but will wait and see how he gets on at Villa.
I completely agree with this and wasn't for a second suggesting the two were at the same level. I just think he maybe needs to prove himself at this level for a little longer before been offered the big jobs.
BBC seem to be suggesting otherwise. I hope he turns the **** ****s down. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/18126718 Martinez last year, OGS this year. **** club, obviously.
