Why does everybody place so much emphasis on assists? Suppose the assister places the ball at another forwards feet and he fluffs it like Torres and his open goal miss? I suppose the corner kick taker has done a fantastic job by kicking the ball and a player heads it in. Robbie Keane makes a simple pass for Bale to score a fifty yard run against Inter and the assist is something remarkable is it? Isn't an assist just a normal part of the match? What's to mention about an assist? Bale dived against Arsenal so the penalty was the ref's assist. I'll say again that once the ball has left the assisters foot it's out of his control and up to whomsoever he passes it. So he provides a brilliant pass and the forward misses or so he provides a brilliant pass and the forward scores....so what? Who provided the assist for Bale's first goal against Inter? It was Bale that did the hard work wasn't it? Some assists are a simple pass of 5 yards for the scorer to tap in from 4,oh brilliant. Lennon crossed for Saha's deflection,oh wonderful. Immature? No,just observant.
Because it defeats the suggestion that he doesn't do anything, especially when combined with the fact that he's our top scorer. He's clearly doing something, isn't he?
Yeah it does - in the 'assist' stat. BBC's live feed for each match records who got the assist for a goal now. Assists aren't as important as goals but you wouldn't have a goal without an assist (be it a 2 yard pass or a 50 yard cross field ball that's passed in the net). For the players, assists are a good way of tracking their contribution to games and shows that they have another side to their playstyle.
He didn't play in our first two games, against Man Utd and City, as he wasn't at the club. He scored twice against Liverpool, got an assist against Arsenal at WHL and a goal at The Emirates and scored against Chelsea at WHL.
What other side? What if a keeper kicks the ball and it lands 15 yards away from the other goal and a forward kicks it in? The assist came from the goalkeeper didn't it?
That's ridiculous, frankly. You're actually ignoring goals, for some reason. He couldn't even play in 3 of these 'top games', either.
i understand what Thor means here...surely the 'assist' is just as important as the second to last 'assist' i.e the person who passed it to the person who made the assist?...
PNP, a goal against Chelsea and Arsenal is hardly anything of note for a forward is it. Where are the hat tricks?
on the flip side though...lets use Bale as an examle and lets use the Inter match again...it was Bale's weaving run and cross that provided the tap in for Pav...who did the hard work there? surely Bale did more than the goalscorer? swings and roundabowts...worse comes to worse id see it like this...at least if there is an assists chart it might give some players impetus to improve their passing so it becomes a meaningful assist pass as oppose to a rubbish non impact pass....
i understand what you mean...and i think when we see a goal being celebrated..more times than not the team hug everybody...even the fullback hugs the keeper....i think players know it is a team effort that made that goal...that will do for me....
In a situation where a player makes a weaving 50 yard run beating 4 players to set up a tap in then it is something remarkable I agree. Has Ade done that?
