So former Pompey rising star and youth academy player Asmir Begovic makes his world cup debut this evening in a match against Argentina. I remember when Begovic made his PL debut under Paul Hart. It was against Sunderland in May of 2009 and we won 3-1, from that moment on it was clear we had a fantastic goalkeeper on our books. It was a shame he only stayed for a short time with us and he left in such negative circumstances, although not of his own doing. Nevertheless, at Stoke his quality continued to be seen, but as one of Pompey's brightest young stars of recent years takes the field against Messi and co, it's certainly a long way from that warm spring evening at Fratton Park five years (back when I was actually happy). That match also happened to be Linvoy's farewell appearance at the Park.
So a reasonable debut. Made some good saves and cannot be faulted for either goal. Unfortunately my dream of both Iran and Bosnia getting through now looks unlikely.
