Well it’s been a long time (old 606) since I’ve done this, so thought I would resurrect the old “tradition” of my “Ask PN” thread.

So, fire away! Anything you want to know from a bloodstock perspective or if there’s a horse you remember from years ago and want to know where he/she is now or what happened to them, etc. If I don’t know the answer myself I’m sure I can dig through the resources here at my office to find out for you.

No question is too daft – you never know, someone else might be thinking the same thing but be too afraid to ask!

Hi Princess

Is there any news on Sea the Stars and any progeny, and with what mares, etc.

Also what Stallions / Mares have you found to have been the most successful for this year amongst 2 y/os, 3 y/os.

Cheers

what happens if I have a non runner in a L15?

PN, this could be a very informative thread.

I actually was wondering about how successful breeze-up purchases are and I wondered if you had any statistics on two year old winners this season that have been purchased from breeze up sales and also if you had any news on the Medaglia D'Oro which topped the sales?

One my earliest memories of UK racing revolves around Crisp. I've heard others say that he did ok over there. Im aware of his heartbreaking second to Red Rum, but can you please shed some light on his other races in Europe?

Ooo, quite a few to start with!

tidalbay - Re. Sea the Stars. The details of his produce won’t be published until the Return of Mares comes out in November. I intend on putting up a list of his foals as well as this year’s coverings when that comes out. In the meantime I put a thread up a few days ago with a few names of his foals that have been published:

Colt out of MAGICAL ROMANCE (G1 winner) – TALL SHIP
Colt out of LOVE DIVINE (G1 winner) – TOUCH THE SKY
Filly out of ALBANOVA (G1 winner) – ALL AT SEA
Colt out of CENTREOFATTENTION – CENTRE STAR

I put a list of the mares covered by STS up on the old 606, I think I still have it at home so will dig it out and put it back up here.

Stats for sires of particular crops are hard to come by. I know some publications do produce them so I’ll have a root around and see what I can find.

Nass – re the Medaglia D’Oro sale topper, I presume you mean the colt bought by John Ferguson at Fasig-Tipton for 500,000? He’s been named WHITE CITY and is in training with Al Zarooni. He does not have any entries at present.

Stats for the Breeze Ups can be hard to come by. I will have a look around and see what is out there.

Cyc, I’ll have a dig through the books and see what comes up on CRISP.

Hi princess, do you know what happened or whats happening with the horse Dancourt, can't find any info anywhere, it got sold to godolphin and use to be with SMS, it then had one run at dubai and was given a awful ride by A Murgia, then hadn't seen it in ages so sent godolphin a email and they said it was not with them anymore but racingpost still have it as with them? Be glad if you could find some info out about it for me, and whats happening iwth it, thanks l cooper

135. WADUD (GB) – Taihei Stud Farm – maiden, dam of G1 placed Ice Queen
136. WALKAMIA (FR) – Ballygallon Stud – G3 winner, G1 placed
137. YUMMY MUMMY (GB) – Newsells Park Stud – winner, half-sister to G1 winner Fame and Glory
138. ZARKASHA (IRE) – HH Aga Khan – unraced half-sister to G3 winner Zarkiya, dam of unbeaten G1 winner Zarkava
139. ZARKAVA (IRE) – HH Aga Khan – unbeaten 5 time G1 winner
140. ZIBILENE (GB) – Barouche Stud – winner, half-sister to G1 winners Barathea and Gossamer

His first foals will start arriving in mid-late January but it will be this time next year before we have a full list of foals born to these mares – we already know that LUSH LASHES has lost her pregnancy.

To give you an overview, his book contains no less than:

21 G1 winners
10 G1 placed mares
2 G2 winners
7 G3 winners
39 dams of G1 winners
10 dams of G1 placed horses
24 half-sisters to G1 winners

A very impressive book of mares, but there will be no excuses if he does not produce the goods!

Hi PN,

Unlikely old Canford will attract such a hareem as STS,but curious as to what you think his fee will be,given his relatively uninspiring pedigree.

Would it even be 10-15K?

Thanks.

Dexter, I expect they'll pitch him in at about €20-€25k to be honest. They set MASTERCRAFTSMAN's fee at €17,500 for his first season this year if you want to use him as a comparison.
His pedigree doesn't fill me with confidence that's for sure!

Nass, I've checked in with some contacts re the Medaglia D'Oro and they tell me that it is not in training at the moment but that they are in the process of naming it.

lcooper - according to Racing Post, DANCOURT was sold in Dubai in March of this year for UAE15,000. Presumably he is still out there: http://bloodstock.racingpost.com/dam/dam_home.sd?horse_id=98909#damTabs=dam_progeny_sales

Back to your original question tidal it is very difficult to find statistics relating to specific age groups of horses. What tends to happen is that the stallion's are grouped by their year of retirement, so you'll get charts showing 1st crop sires, 2nd crop sires, etc.

The 1st crop sires are easily available on the Racing Post website. According to the latest tables I have the 2nd and 3rd crop sires are as follows:

2nd Crop Sires in Europe (oldest crop 3) (as at 31/07/11)

Top 10 in order of prize money

Holy Roman Emperor £985,022
Hurricane Run £895,120
Aussie Rules £617,968
Shirocco £548,542
Cacique £518,159
Iffraaj £443,338
Iceman £341,937
Layman £319,455
Hurricane Cat £261,091
Ad Valorem £242,463

3rd Crop Sires (oldest crop 4) (as at 24/07/11)

Dubawi £1,464,841
Shamardal £1,102,647
Oratorio £939,763
Footstepsinthesand £663,626
Whipper £640,819
Azamour £596,565
Motivator £468,800
Antonius Pius £377,350
Pastoral Pursuits £372,009
Doyen £366,048

Cheers PN.

As a follow up, why would you buy a horse at the breeze ups and not put it straight into training? Surely its not going to be a NH Store!!

Some of the breeze up horses are just pushed too hard to look good for the sale. In theory you are buying a horse that is ready to run, indeed one horse sold at the Doncaster Breeze Up this year came with an entry in a race a few days later! I'll have to look it up to see if it ran or not.

Some horses do come out very quickly after their sale, but others are not the finished article and need more time.

Just as an aside, when I say the horse is not in training, it does not mean that it is not in a yard somewhere. The trainers have to file a report on (I think) a monthly basis of all horses in work, if a horse has some time off for whatever reason they will not be listed in that months "in training" list.

The one that ran the day after the sale was The Dancing Lord I believe.

Cheers for the info.

Do you have access to gelding dates?
