The council took its time over this one, obviously no members of Newcastle council reads the comments on NOT606. perhaps they should in future. A no brainer for no brainers. bet some of em wear the shirt though? MIKE ASHLEY is locked in a war of words over the controversial renaming of St Jamesâ Park. http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepag...rows-with-council-over-St-James-renaming.html Newcastle City Council have blasted the plan to change the stadium name to the Sports Direct Arena and have urged media outlets to keep calling it St Jamesâ Park. Toon owner Ashley and top brass have threatened legal action. Chairman Derek Llambias said: âWe feel this issue is being used by the council as a cheap publicity stunt during these hard economic times.â But a council spokesman said: âTo us, along with the vast majority of fans, the home of Newcastle United will always be called St Jamesâ Park.â He added: âThe club have the right to sell sponsorship at the ground but they also have a responsibility towards the history and identity
Mike Ashley is apparently free to call the stadium whatever the **** he likes but not THE St. James Park that the ground was named after. That's why the council are digging their heels in so I'm told. If I'm wrong maybe the Mags can come on & kindly correct me.
Sure there will be some response Billy, personally speaking, changing the name will not change whats ingrained in my head, nor my local history.
Personally, if I'm sipping a pint on European soil watching NUFC again next season then the stadium name will be the last thing on my mind.
Not being a twat just simply stating what I was told, might be a lot of ****e for all I know. If I'm rang then nee bother.
I don't think so I think the council at this present time have much more important things to do other than worry about a football club selling it's stadiums naming rights. They should stick to what the should be doing, creating jobs etc. Let's remember Ashley as yet has not found a buyer to rename the stadium and is using it as free advertising. This advertising due to the council and Newcastle fans staging daft funerals is kept in the public spot light and everytime gets a free mention for Sports direct. Now it may be bad publicity in Newcastle BUT how many branches are in Newcastle? Remember this has made national news. Ashley can back down at anytime and with a well worded statement could probably get most of the toon fans back on side, with the team doing so well though do the toon supporters really care about what is probably seen as a temporary thing? Infact if Ashley could actually persuade someone to buy the stadium name for a period of years the less permanent the name becomes and the more people will refer to it as St James park. For me I remember the whole move from Roker Park and people being up in arms, I'm not sure there are many Sunderland fans regretting the move. Had we still been at Roker Park who knows what league we'd be in. For our current stadium I hold no affiliation with the name at all I'd go as far as to encourage a name change.
Like most people have already said, I'm not all that arsed. In the real world, the one we live in, the stadium will ALWAYS be St James' Park. That's what it is, that's what we recognise, that's what we call it. The council are clearly trying to make a name for themselves and as Leazes mentioned, Ashley's starting to turn the club around so as long as the positives continue to outweigh the negatives I'll be more concerned about the price of a pint these days. Effin' tories.
Great to have you back on our board Aldridge, dont know what went down before, but like your imput, always did, nice one.
Don't get on here often tbf bill, usually hovering around Toon Forum nowadays but still pop over to not606 to see some of the old-skool lot. Looks like I've missed some canny debates
ALD , You know yourself things can be good / bad, dependant on the scores of the day, plus alcohol in many cases, mine included. but as you said some realy good threads out there, you can still backtrack as you know. as I said, nice to have your imput.
I can clear this up once and for all, last night on the chase, Question,"What is the name of Newcastle United s ground", answer ST JAMES PARK. Don't argue with Bradley Walsh.
I think this is just typically poor Sun journalism tbh. This is an old story that was reported in the Chronicle months ago when we had all the initial furore. It has just been re-reported because a FOI request revealed the actual correspondence between the owner and the Council.
For once I'd have to back our odious owners here. This smells badly of a cheap publicity stunt to take some of the heat off from the massive financial hole Newcastle City Council has got itself into. As much as I'd prefer he'd not donned his cheap ****e all over the place, he has and no council motion is going to change that. These ****ers should get with their jobs. Having seen the inner workings of government/council offices when I was a lot younger, god knows it would be a first.
When I worked for Northumbeland County Council their headquarters were opposite the keep in Newcastle so whar's in a name
