Michael Laudrup has confirmed Swansea captain Ashley Williams will not feature in Saturday’s game against Sunderland as he continues his recovery from an ankle injury. The Wales international has not featured for a month but was named as a substitute for the defeat against Southampton before linking up with the Wales team on international duty. However, his manager insists the Sunderland match has come too soon for the 29-year-old, although he could be in contention for next week’s Europa League game against Kuban Krasnodar as he attempts to regain match practice in time for the upcoming South Wales derby against Cardiff. "Ashley was on the bench at Southampton and he could maybe have played for ten or 15 minutes, but he will not take part this weekend," Laudrup told the South Wales Evening Post. "He went to join up with Wales and the doctors there saw what we had seen - everybody could see that he was not 100 per cent. "They all said he needed maybe one or two weeks to recover. "Even if he trains tomorrow and feels okay after a couple of sessions, he still has to get match fitness back. "If everything goes well, we could maybe look at the game next Thursday or West Ham. "I know Ashley would like to play a game before Cardiff - but I will not risk him."
I do wonder why he played on during the Palace game , it wasn't exactly backs against the wall stuff .We've suffered quite a few injuries so far ,and the majority involving soft tissue and whether Ash thought he was ok ,regardless perhaps that decision to stay on should have come from the management and not the player .That decision may cost us .
Agree he was clearly injured for the last 50-55 minuts of the game. The decision not to replace him with Amat proberly cost Williams a few weeks extra on the bench.
