    this most attractive Breton village.

How many other Saints' fans would choose their holiday destination based on their allegiance to our great club.

PS It was nice to come home and see we have been promoted on this board even if the BBC are taking a little time to catch up with our progress.

It sounds a very enticing place. My late father and his wife lived in an equally enchanting village in Normandie (Bellencombre) It was a throwback to another age as it was so quiet. Welcome back Godders for a great summer of sport beginning with England's cricket captain in the runs again.

Goiod to have you back Godders. We stayed in a really quiet village called Plounerin, Bretagne last year. Totally away from it all!

The Vaucluse for me every time. There is nowhere else on earth like it and they have some of the best wines in the world.

Whilst I was in Quimper last week the very lovely Mrs Godders:emoticon-0115-inlov and I chatted with the chef who had just cooked us a superb meal.

It turned out he had lived in North London for a while and had become a keen Arsenal fan.

He said he liked young Alex and he became very interested when I told him that our academy was as successful as ever with some exceptional players coming through.

He asked if I thought any of them would join Arsenal.

My answer was not a very polite one.

For anyone who has not been before if you get a chance go to Dubai. Been to a fair few places in the world but nothing even comes close.

Not quite 'le Saint', but there are quite a lot of towns/exotic islands in the world called saint something, so this policy doesn't necessarily restrict you too much!

A lot of fans live in Southampton because it is named after the football club.

Should we petition for the name of our fair city to be changed to Sainthampton?

This would be OK because hampton I believe means the home place so Sainthampton means the home place of the Saints.

I think that is most apt.

We used to go camping in Sainte-Marie-sur-Mer, when I was a lad.

    Sainthampton?

I would brush up on your Cockney vernacular, Godders.

Glad you had a nice time though.

Thanks for your kind words. This was my first stay in Brittany as I think I have been just about everywhere else in France. Brittany is a lovely area which reminded me a lot of our own glorious county.

Because Brittany is so far west we were enjoying what was equivalent to double BST and it was still light at nearly 11 pm local time.

To bring this thread back to football I remember a few years ago watching a son et lumière played against the walls of the cathederal at Chartres and the thought struck me that if a similar light and sound show was played against the walls of St Mary's for evening games in the winter it would add to the atmosphere and build the excitement as fans approached the ground. It would not be very expensive and would be great fun.

If you wanted to do something similar at Fratton Park I still have a little plastic projector in the loft that I used for my children when they were little so you could borrow that if you like. It would only need a couple of batteries. It would project a sort of weak image onto the wall to illustrate the bedtime story I was reading them. If you would prefer to buy your own I have seen them on eBay for just a couple of pounds.

If you were really a totally committed Saints fan you would have been on Not606 all week posting speculation about future signings. The matter of when we are officially Premier League is a bit controversial, as I understand it the current season finishes on the 1st June, and then the next one starts on the 30th June, so that might be the official date.

The speculation on signings is something I do not enjoy and my apologies for not posting but as this thread implies I have been in a quite remote corner of France for the past week enjoying a holiday by doing lots of things I don't usually do.

By the way what do you think of the son et lumière idea?

Ah Chartres, Chichester's twin city. Both have rather interesting Cathedrals, Chartres in the gothic style and Chi with it's unique seperate bell tower.

I shall pass over your projector, but it did remind me of a device we had when I was a child.

We won it in a Kelloggs cereal competition, it was called a "Show and Tell" and told various fables and fairy stories by means of a record player, with a built in projector and screen that used a series of slides on a plastic strip that you pushed into the machine and, as the record revolved, it forced the slides back out thus projecting a montage of somewhat, gaudy pictures to tell the relevant story.

Sometimes for fun, I would confuse houseguests, by deliberately putting the wrong record, with the wrong slides and watching the resulting debacle from behind the curtains! I've managed to find a picture, ours was blue I think.

Modern technology is so wonderful that no one is surprised by anything any more, especially the young. How much more magical must the 'magic lantern' shows have appeared to our Victorian ancestors.

As a young man I remember doing a sketch in our village Christmas show which was a doctor carrying out an operation behind a backlit sheet such that all that could be seen by the audience was the silhouette of the doctor, the nurse and the patient. It was hilarious fun and yet so simple. You could do the most ridiculous things and yet they looked real to the audience.
