Do you think you would looking forward to this season with such optimism if Torres had stayed? Do you think Suarez and Torres would have been a good combination? or is Torres just a lone striker and thats it? I personally am excited about the Suarez/Carrol partnership and in Suarez have, arguably, the most in form player around right now. From the little I have seen of Torres pre season he still looks as though he has lost the fantastic pace and finishing ability he had when he first joined us. I don't know whether he will ever regain that form. You have to think he will come good eventually but if you compare him to Owen (sorry) it is a very similar stuation.Injuries eventually taking that toll. Torres's attitude seemed to affecting the rest of the squad which changed when he left and we bought new players in. Suarez whole demeanour,on the other hand,is one of sheer delight at playing for the reds, every picture you see of him he has a big grin plastered across his face.Peoples moods are infectious and I think he will be sensational for us.Just hope after all the hype he lives up to it.
As you can only look at the form that Torres has demonstrated over the last 2 seasons then I have to say that we are far better off with the partnership of Suarez and Carroll. Even at his best Torres always wanted to play as a lone striker whereas Suarez's style of play means that he will create opportunities for others. Add to that the opportunity for Carroll to create an even closer relationship with Suarez and we have the potential for another Keegan/Toshack partnership.
I would prefer Suarez & Carroll, we stuck by Torres even when he was poor and I don't think anything has changed. He was even suggested for our crap fantasy team.
I'd actually prefer the Suarez and Torres relationship only if Torres could get fit, snap out of moods and take the advice of Dalglish. But that would be ignoring the terrible year and a half Torres had with us, so judging on that then I'd go with Carroll; he adds another dimension to our attack and we've seen that if he gets service he can score goals for fun.
I don't get into the ''What ifs''. Secondly I don't think Torres ansd Suarez would have been able to play together. Torres is what us Irish people call in our language a ''Me Feiner''. He looks after himself and only himself. He's not a team player and never was a team-player. I'm not saying Torres didn't contribute, he did with his goals, but what else did he do? Nothing. Have you noticed how Dirk Kuyt seems far happier playing alongside Suarez. When someone else scores Suarez goes ballistic as if it were he that scored. He's the team-player. He snaps at heels, he wins possession, he's a nightmare to defend against. He's the complete all-rounder. I believe due to contrasting types the traditional 6ft 4 tank that wins everything in the air and provides an aerial threat, and the nuisance with blinding skill. Its a mouth-watering combination.
I've noticed that and i love him for it! Torres would probably be annoyed that somebody else scored instead of him!
