I had a look on Liverpools OWS to see what friendlies they have played going back to 1990. They rarely play at home and when they have done, the teams have been : Parma, Lazio (twice), Valencia, A. Madrid, Sociedad, Porto and Inter. Away games in England have been against the likes of Villa and Man City (before the Prem), Pompey, Millwall, Crewe and Wxm loads of times, Burnley and Tranmere, Bristol City and Millwall. Theme appearing ? If they are going to play at home it appears they want to fill, or at least half fill the ground. With the greatest of respect and saying this as a City supporter, we may have taken a lot there for a friendly, but I dare say Lpool would not have turned out in droves. Maybe they want competitive English style games to blood youngsters with not much experience, in grounds that are fullish (due to the drawing power Lpool still undoubtedly have), and rely upon European games for their regular first teamers. Or maybe they really are after Rosy. Or Fryatt. Or Harper.
Yeah to be fair that system has really helped them in winning loads of trophies since 1990 Out of interest did they lose many of those friendlies against English teams 3-0?
Do you think it might have been something to do with City rather playing Liverpool than Grimsby? Just a thought like!
We replaced Grimsby with Liverpool 'because of an impending transfer between the two clubs' that's taken directly from Grimsby's OWS, who presumably were given this reason by us. That may have been Gulacsi, or it could be someone different going either way, we don't know. It may have fit in with the sort of friendlies they like to have, but there was something else behind it too.
OR it may just have been an old fashioned pre-season game. just a thought ? whatever, the game and result will have give the City boys added confirdence. for sure city wont play anyone that good in the league this season.
This is literally the oddest thread I have ever seen. You mean you've only just noticed that Premier League teams if playing a friendly at home like it to be against 'glamour' opposition, whereas if they play away it's often a fitness exercise against lower league opposition? Give the man a biscuit.
or because they thought it was a good workout for their younger players and City's level would produce an even test?
It is bizarre, when I saw it I was expecting it to be "I looked on the Liverpool website and they said it was to do with (insert name of player)" It was interesting as we came up the leagues to see the friendlies changing. I remember us playing Hearts and was it Barnsley at BP because they were the bigger clubs, and then a few years later playing the reverse fixtures because of how much we'd grown (and in Barnsley's case they'd fallen). I know it's to do with replacing the Feyenoord game but this Bradford friendly throws a spanner in the works. Last time we had them in preseason they were ****ed financially and they ended up fielding a youth team against us due to the first team not wanting to get injured if they were going to have to find a new club, and yet they're still coming to us now as a L2 club.
