    The FA Cup 3rd round
    Saturday 4th January 2014
St Mary's Stadium, 3pm Kick off (predicted attendance 12,000 <laugh>)

    Match Officials:

Referee: Robert Madley (the one who sent off Ramirez, Fox and a West Brom player last season)
Assistants: Andrew Garratt & Mark Scholes
    4th Official: James Linington

    Form guide:

    Southampton:

    Southampton 0-3 Chelsea
    Everton 2-1 Southampton

    Cardiff 0-3 Southampton
    Southampton 2-3 Tottenham
    Newcastle 1-1 Southampton
    Southampton 1-1 Manchester City

    Burnley:

    Burnley 3-2 Huddersfield
    Wigan 0-0 Burnley
    Middlesbrough 1-0 Burnley
    Burnley 2-1 Blackpool
    Leicester 1-1 Burnley
    Burnley 1-0 Barnsley

    Team news:

Saints may make changes with Shaw unlikely to be risked after going off injured in the defeat to Chelsea. Wanyama, Boruc and Guly still out. I want a strong team as I think we could go a long way in the FA Cup this season.

    My predicted line up:

    ------------------Davis----------------
    ---Clyne----Fonte-----Yoshida-----Fox
    -------Schneiderlin-----Cork------------
    --Lallana--------Ramirez-------Rodriguez
    ---------------Lambert-----------------

Subs: Gazzaniga, Chambers, Lovren, JWP, Davis, Gallagher, Reed.

Put out a strong team and we should win. I'm not sure how strong a team Burnley will put out as they are going for promotion and don't need a cup distraction. 3-1 Saints for me.

Need to play a strong side and win for the sake of the team and fans, but no manager can avoid meddling. Losing to Chelsea is tolerable, but losing to Burnley is not. They are a good side and need to be treated with respect.

Burnley are a good side but we can still put out a decent 2nd team. How about

    Gazza

    Chambers Maya Jos Targett

    Cork Morgan

    JWP Reed Gaston

    Dani

Subs Davies Clyne Fonte Davis Adam Jrod Rickie

I would like to see some of academy kids given a start aka Reed, Gallagher and Rowe mixed in with some senior experienced squad players.

Tbh most of the first team look like they need a rest so we are in great shape for Westbrom.

I wouldn't bet on Osvaldo being available. Lambert can play in this one after only playing 30 minutes against Chelsea.

I'd go with something like this:

    Gazzaniga

    Chambers Yoshida Hooiveld Fox

    JWP Davis

    Reed Ramirez Rodriguez

    Lambert

Subs: Davis, Clyne, Fonte, Lallana, Gallagher, Rowe, Sims

I like that line-up, though I'd be tempted to rest JayRod. Looked a little jaded last couple of games.

Disagree about losing to Burnley not being tolerable. If our strongest team lose to them then I'd agree, but if MP decides that he wants to keep us many players fresh for WBA after a hectic festive period, then I would just accept whatever team he picks. I would like us to win, however if a weakened team loses I won't throw my toys around.

Yeah I would too, but I figured since it's against Burnley it'd be harsh to drop him!

I don't! Remember what happened last time Gazzaniga, Fox and Hooiveld were all in the starting line up?

There really shouldn't be a question of resting anyone apart from Shaw who's got a knock. It's a full week until West Brom and we are perfectly safe in mid table. There is no reason why we shouldn't play a very strong side.

Point taken, but (with all due respect) Burnley aren't Spurs. Hooiveld and Fox coped fine in the championship so they should cope fine against a championship side now.

Tomw - fully agree, best possible fully fit team (anyone with a knock or just knackered need a fortnight rest)
Plenty of recovery time until WBA
This is an important game to get back into the winning way again as loosing and conceding bucket loads of goals can become a habit

You can't look at the Chelsea game and still suggest we shouldn't be resting players. Shaw, Lovren, Lallana and Rodriguez would massively benefit from a bit of a break.

Yeah or we could lose to Burnley because they can barely run at this point.

That's just a slight exaggeration. Start with a strong side, then once we've gone 2 goals in front take Lallana, Rodriguez etc off. Shaw I want rested as he picked up a knock but the rest can play.

I wonder how many people have changed their mind bout the cups now we're looking comfortable in 9th. I got slated by a few in November for saying i would take a cup win over a few league positions, there was about 70/30 split against my opinion. Might of just evened out now...
