Can the Gills still remain promotion contenders, currently sixth place in league two just three points off the top spot, after an exciting start to the season for their supporters with ten points taken in the first four games. Although the team seems to have lost some slight momentum in its promotion challenge, having suffered defeats in their last two games. According to reports Manager Andy Hessenthaler, has said that we need to now go another four games unbeaten to get our target, also questioning recent fitness levels... http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/g/gillingham/9581505.stm. So this Saturday 10th September, 2011 – Accrington Stanley are the visitors to Priestfield for our seventh league game of the season. Accrington ‘who are they’ Stanley a phrase well known from a TV advert in the 80’s. The club’s first football league game took place on the 5th August, 2006, after the collapse of the original Accrington Stanley in 1966. Gillingham have played Accrington Stanley three times at Priestfield, having won on every occasion, however, many fans will not forget the goal feast at Accrington in the 2010/11 season, when the Gills lost 7-4. Accrington currently fifteenth in the league, with a total of eight points, their away record is no wins, two draws and one loss. So bearing in mind the Gills have never lost to Accrington at Priestfield and that the visitors have not won away this season, if the Gills are serious promotion contenders, then they should be taking all three points, although I guess the team from Lancashire will have other ideas. Reports today (Tuesday 6th September) suggest that midfielder Jack Payne has been ruled out for four weeks, after picking up an injury during a challenge in the previous Shrewsbury game. This will be further bad news for Hessy, who is already struggling up front after the pre season injury to new striker signing Adam Birchall. Anything but a win is bound to put a serious dent in the Gillingham team confidence after recent events, so is the pressure already mounting this early in the season? Every Gill’s supporter will be hoping we now find our strength again as a team and that Danny Kedwell can at last open his account from open play, whilst a loan Championship striker could also be the call of the day. http://www.gillinghamfan.com/index.html
brb, I thought they were 15th in the league Anyhow, 2 draws and only 1 loss suggests having 11 men in defense, and on past form we're really good at breaking down defensive teams aren't we?
