  1. For some reason, even though a lot of people called him **** and still do, I've always had some sort of affection for Leon Best. I've never hated him. He's always seemed like a nice bloke, that tries hard.

I'm happy that he's proving himself on the pitch, and scoring goals. 8 goals in 11 starts in the PL can't be argued with.

    Ok, here's what I'm saying...

If he scores around 15+ goals this season, and shows that he can maintain a good level of fitness and goals to games ratio for a full season or maybe a bit longer..... do you reckon we could give him the number 9 shirt....?

LOL but seriously, all we would want from a number 9 is a player that will score a good amount of goals, try hard and be committed to the club. I also think there's basically no chance of him leaving, as top clubs will be looking for someone better, and i only see him leaving for a top club. Leon Best strikes me as a bloke that just wants to be successful at a club and get his chance, and he'll hopefully be successful here.

I don't give a **** about the number 9 being a local lad, because in my opinion it doesn't make it less likely that they'll leave. That sort of loyalty in football doesn't exist. I know you'll all say that you'd play for Newcastle on 1k a week and love to wear the number 9, but unfortunately footballers are different to us. The lure of big money, fame and big contracts eventually does something to their mind.

I believe Shearer loved the club, but not enough to stay with it no matter what, and i think his big wages and being in the CL for a lot of his time here helped secure him from leaving for Man Utd. If we sat mid table for a certain amount of time i believe he would have left.

    Anyway, i digress.

Do you think if Leon Best shows a good level of commitment to the team and the fans, maintains fitness, leads the line well and scores a good amount of goals, that he should be given the number 9 shirt?

This is a big IF btw, it all depends on how he performs.

Perhaps his surname will be apt for him after all.

If he can score the goals. And prove to us he deserves it. Why not? I like Leon. Ive said all summer he can score 15 + goals. I hope he can prove people wrong.

If any of our strikers can consistently score a cracking amount of goals and show commitment to the cause then they're an option for the number 9, of course. Same with Ba. Same with Sammy.

If Best and Ba perform well this season I'd have no hesitation whatsoever in giving either of them the number 9 shirt. Locality means bugger all unless Super Mac is a Geordie suddenly.

If he scores 15+ I'd consider giving him it. He's stuck by it and showed REAL determination to prove himself.

  8. Agreed. As long as we don't give it out like we did to the likes of Martins.... <doh>

Obafemi Martins was even English so nationality doesn't even matter. Cole and Ferdinand weren't Geordies either.

I don't think affection is the word I'd use for Best!
I think he'll be decent as for the number 9 shirt I think we should wait till the perfect candidate comes along

Someone may as well have the ****er seeing as Ashley doesn't think it's worth wiping his arsehole on so if he bags that amount I'd give him it

I like your thinking mate and if he can score a lot of goals then I would maybe give him the shirt, but I just think he lacks quality. He is a nice lad and everything but he is always offside and looks a bit clumsy (not Shola clumsy, but clumsy)

  13. Agreed. He looks stronger, quicker and in better shape than he did in the CC. He looked fat in the CC, he looks slimmed down and bulked.

IMO he's probably physically stronger than any of our other strikers, apart from Ranger but he doesn't count.

Leon Best is good. But is not right for the number 9.

I like the idea of someone home-grown having the shirt.

    Bit like Shearer or Carroll!!

I reckon that if one does well, yet we bring in a striker - we give it to the one who does well adn tell the new expensive striker they have to earn it. Competitiveness will mean matches won and goals scored I hope

I agree, the number 9 **** should be given to a player that earns it at the club, not someone who's got a reputation *cough*Martins*cough* I'd love to see Leon in number 9 <ok>

    Sorry.

But seriously, if he scores 15-20 goals a season I would possibly consider it. I'd probably wait another year just in case he isn't a one-season wonder. Also you've got to be sure he can cope with the pressure of the #9 as it is a big responsibility. He's always been a player who has struck me as giving 100% so I wouldn't worry about that side of things.
