22 mins gone, we’re playing some good stuff and Odegaard looks really on it, but we need to deal with their long diagonals better. Also, Bowen has beaten Tierney in 1v1s on the byline 3 times now. Needs to sharpen up.
Penalty to West Ham. Ffs. Mistimed challenge by Saliba, slightly unlucky but he does make a bit of contact with Bowen. Annoying.
Saliba shouldn’t have let the ball run across him to Antonio in the build-up. If he deals with it earlier, that situation doesn’t happen.
Gabriel shouldn’t have gone so tight to Antonio there. He wasn’t going anywhere, he’s bought the foul and now we’ve relieved the pressure after we went through a period of sustained pressure.
HT. 0-1. Against the run of play, but Saliba made a mistake not dealing with the transition and West Ham are one of the worst teams to play against when they’re defending a lead. We’ve created a lot, but when we get into the final third, the final pass isn’t the right type of ball. West Ham are clearing their lines easily. We keep whipping balls in high and wide, but our striker is 5’10 and he’s up against two 6’3 centre halves. We’re just not gonna score this way. Need to unlock their defence in a different way.
Given the games we've got coming up, this is the one game we absolutely can't afford to drop points in.
We’ve been counterpressing and winning the ball back superbly this second half. Every time we do, you see the West Ham players shrug their shoulders or flail their arms. Each time they do that, it’s a sign that they’re losing belief and can’t compete with us.
FT. 3-1. OK first half performance (but still some defensive errors), but a sensational second half performance. Everyone played very well. Special shoutouts to Saka and Odegaard who were outrageously good tonight. I’m glad that we’ve shown we can come back from behind and win games, something we didn’t do enough last season. We have a lot of strings to our bow. Happy to extend our lead back on top of the table.
