Gonna be totally honest - normally, I want us to have a go in the League Cup and make a big effort to win it, as I don't like being dismissive of silverware and we haven't won this competition since 1993. However, this season, with the form we're in and fixture congestion to come post-World Cup, I really couldn't give a damn if we get knocked out or not. I see this as an unwelcome distraction. Although I never want us to lose any game, I wouldn't be down in the dumps if we got knocked out of this. I definitely don't want to see a single first team player in the starting line-up on Wednesday.
Can’t watch atm - following the game on BBC Sport. 1-0 Nketiah though. Apparently was a nice finish. And against the run of play based off what I’ve read
1-1 now. Welbeck from the penalty spot. Karl Hein the debutant with a moment to forget bringing him down in the box.
Hein bringing Welbeck down and Welbeck equalising from the spot. Really poor slip and attempt to recover from Hein. Hopefully it doesn’t destroy his confidence.
2-1 Brighton. Against the run of play this half but I can’t say I’m overly bothered about losing at the moment.
3-1 Brighton. Looks like it’s game over now. Jesus and Zinchenko coming on for reasons I don’t understand.
As I’ve said before. Whilst generally I take the League Cup more seriously than others, this is one year it is the absolute lowest of our priorities. And as we’ve seen tonight, we simply don’t have the squad depth to fight on 4 fronts. Hopefully the squad depth improves by January, but right now, we just need to get to the WC in a strong position in the league and ready for what comes in January.
As much as I hate to lose, we'd be better off saving those players for the FA cup and for squad depth in the League and Europa
Look at the XIs put out by arsenal and liverpool and it's clear neither want to be in the tournament. Don't blame then. Just hope a loss doesn't detail our momentum slightly. Need to go into the WC break with a win in our last game at wolves.
