Arsenal have spent £228.60m on wages since they last won a trophy and £63.60m
    on Arsene's wages too.

Meanwhile tickets are priced £63-£126 for big games that they tend to bottle.
Give me an oligarch owner all day long.

£228.60 on wages - pure genius. And he only pocketed just over 60 quid for all that hard work, legendary man. Talk about working on a shoe string!

That means Wenger has been on an average of £135k per week for 9 years. Impressive.

I'm pretty sure, for half the money, I could have brought them at least as much silverware in that time. ;)

Arsenal have not won it yet. They probably bottle it like Birmingham Carling Cup final a few years ago. Amazing how a manager at a top club can go almost 10 years without a trophy and not get sacked.

Given the target was to maintain CL football up until a point that the stadium debt was more managable and we could renegotiate sponsorship deals, he did exactly what the board wanted from him. No idea why that would lead to him getting sacked. Everyone involved with the club would have liked us to win trophies during that period and we've come close, narrowly missing out on the league on a couple of occasions, a CL final, 2 League Cup finals and now an FA cup final. Football is a game of fine margins.

He could maybe have added a couple of trophies along the way but he gave the club the stability it needed to get our stadium and set us up for the future. Now the club is in a position where its far more financially sorted with far more funds available for players, a good core of young players tied to long contracts and hopefully our first trophy in a long time.

If you look at it from more than just the angle of what silverware has been won Wenger has been doing a good job during our trophyless period and been good for the club. It's short sighted to suggest he should have been fired before now for not delivering silverware.

Try reading what your replying to rather than trying to make smart comments lol

I am saying it is short sighted to judge him just on trophies when there are so many more factors involved in his job and other areas to judge him on based on our targets and positionas a club.

I'm not saying it is short sighted to look at a 10 year period. <doh>

I think he has done well given the money spent but half the reason money has not been spent is his blind faith in the post 'invincibles' project that really hasn't worked. You've had money and you've been overly tight IMO. He could have done better.

He really should deliver now no?
Every season we hear...."He guided us through the stadium move etc, we are earning money now blah blah", and still year after year, 4th place, CL first round knockouts or Quarters at best and no trophies.
afcftw how long would you be willing to wait?
Why make such a big deal about getting into the CL every year if he isnt going to build a team with the stones to win the damned thing?

He could have added the odd trophy and he had some dud signings which didn't help. Not beyond criticism by any means. But he's done a good job doing what the club needed. And it's only really last summer that proper money was available, which is when our new financial deals have come into place. Whether Wenger or the club could have been slightly less frugal is anyones guess but we have no way of knowing if more funds could have been spent and whos decision it would have been not to spend said funds.

Think we are seeing a new approach now though with a good solid young core of players all on long contracts to stop them being poached and the money available to add the quality players we need. Hopefully this summer we will see some ready made players signed to Arsenal. But who knows!

Out of interest, what do you think will happen should Wenger fail to win the FA Cup? Will he be shown the door?

No. He's already been offered a new contract and despite not putting pen to paper Wenger has given a gentlemans agreement that he will sign the new two year deal.

Not presumptious at all. If this wasn't done then should we win we wouldn't be able to have a parade. It's basic planning that all clubs will do in the same situation. Hull City for example will have made preperations so that should they win they can have there celebration parade. Considering Arsenal is a London club this should come as even less surprise. Completely unimportant bit of information lol.

£228.6m in nine years? So around £25.4 million a year. Less than Wigan.

    Maths fail alert! <ok>

I'm rather bored and quite happy to point out the obvious at the moment :p

Surely the bait is only taken if it actually irritates someone?
