Just watched the Brightom win over Newcastle and ask myself why can't we be like them? Nice new stadium and crowds in the mid 20K's and a team that not only play well but compete at any level. They went through lean years with results and problems getting their new stadium built but look at them now. Considering their recent past they have overcome the problems with a group of committed players who show pride in the shirt without any obvious superstars or egoes interfering with the mix. How nice it would be if our club had the same desire to rise to that level but I can't in all honesty see us achieving anything close in the near future, based on the existing problems that plague us. Until the management decide what they strive to be I'm afraid we are destined to wallow in the mire and could possibly end up exactly where we don't want be for the future. A very sad state of affairs that will continue to alienate the people that should matter most - us.
It took them around 15 years to get their stadium, plus years in L1 before they finally came good. We have been trying for the stadium for 3 - only 12 years to go on that one - and if we have a spell playing in L1 in the meantime only then would be able to claim we had emulated them. I can't see City fans having the patience tbh.
We've had more than enough lean years in our history so Brighton are still playing catch up in that respect. They kept the ball, hunted in packs, defenders strong under pressure and also able to play a pass to colleague instead of hoofball. Admittedly Newcastle were very poor but a good performance from Brighton. I'm just jealous that we in Bristol will never be a force in football other than in Leagues One and Two.
There are a lot of clubs of our size or smaller that we should be aspiring to emulate for their squad, motivation or facilities on much smaller budgets than ours. I am fast losing patience (and interest which is a sad thing to admit) with the owner and board at City, whilst on the pitch this afternoon it's now a given that we cant keep a clean sheet home or away in any competition and against any opposition.
