Morning all, Since I joined the forum I've noticed there's a ridiculously different amount of fans of our club with such different contrasting views, attitudes, opinions, predictions and so on. I'd say I'm a mix of a pessimist and optimist, I tend to have fights in my brain of contrasting emotions and expectations, though I'd probably lean more towards pessimistic as it tends to prevail in the end, I'm a "glass half empty" sort of guy. It's not that I like being pessimistic, it's just I feel the way I look at certain aspects helps me prepare slightly easier for potential disappointment. An example would be Wednesday's pending match with Chelsea, although I fully believe the team we have are capable of winning the match, on paper our squad is ridiculously talented and as a Spurs fan one I'm most proud of (Optimism starts the fight) but when taking into account the history we have at the Bridge and the fact we haven't played too well in the past couple of games against opposition nowhere near Chelsea's standard (Pessimism gains momentum), I'm preparing myself for a potential loss (Pessimism lands a knock down blow) even though I don't necessarily think we'll lose (Optimism stands up after an 8-count looking battered)... Does that make any sense what so ever? If not I apologise It's like I have the utmost belief in the squad, but a fraction of my brain tells me to shut the **** up as I'm going to be hit with disappointment. So what would you consider yourself as?
Realistic. missed that one, didn't ya SOS? I probably come across negative/pessimistic at times (most of the time), but the usual disappointment from my beloved Spurs has driven me to this! Overall however, i think I'm realistic.
Uh-huuuh, there is a reason I didn't stick realistic my friend! I believe that everyone's views come down to what they believe is "realistic". For instance, someone could say we've a strong chance of finishing 4th if things go our way (optimist), another would say we've no chance (pessimist) and another would say the league is ours (delusional) yet all would consider themselves as being realistic. I too would say I'm realistic, though someone would probably think I'm a negative, **** talking mug who's nowhere near being realistic (which could be true I suppose)
Think I am a 'PROD'!! Depends on results, mood and amount of alcohol or other substances...... Or in other words, a generally realistic and optimistic pessimist with occasional Delusional tendencies!!!
That's a very very good point. I hadn't thought of it like that SOS. I think I could only fall into the "Pessimistic" category then, as I spend far more time moaning than congratulating. It's weird. Last season, (other than the period where we buckled 3rd place and ALL of us were furious) I actually think I was fairly positive throughout, except for the transfer windows. - where I've yet to be satisfied. ever. However this season, despite thinking AVB has done a superb job in his first season, I have complained a lot more. I don't think our football is anywhere near as attractive and the transfer windows have been even more annoying. There's load of little things that have made me much more negative this season. - It's all down to Levy and Co, and you all know I think that so I won't go into it. Frustration has made me like that this season, as we just haven't helped ourselves in so many different ways. But despite all this, I am positive too. - it was only a couple of weeks ago that I felt confident in beating City and stated that in the match thread. - many others thought we had no chance. I guess I get a gut feeling and just go with it. As I've said, because we don't help ourselves it's made my gut feeling swing towards the negative/pessimistic side.
This is Spurs were talking about, so I think most of us experience all three emotions in the course of one game. I know I frequently do
Definitely I'm an optimist. I still look at the fixtures and think 'if this, this and this happens we can make second'. Not delusional though as I know it won't happen.
In life I am an optimistic pessimist. I assume/presume the worst, so don't get maudlin about it when it happens. And when it doesn't happen, that is a pleasant bonus.
I'm pretty much in the same boat as you there mate. Last season (and previous seasons bar the final third) everything was going great. We were constantly touted as the most entertaining team to watch (rightfully so), we had amazing individual players (Bale, King, Modric, Rafa and even Ade to be fair), a manager who I rated extremely highly and when we lost games, for MOST of them we were very unlucky in doing so. This season started off on a major negative for me and if I'm honest it's kind of stuck with me the whole season. Harry was sacked, we replaced him with someone who at the time I felt was an awful choice (still not convinced he's better but has impressed), lost a legend in Ledley, sold Luka & Rafa with the latter being a bit of a surprise and then the new manager came and started off with some poor selections/ results. We still don't play great football but due to key players, (Bale, Lloris, Vertonghen mainly) we've grabbed some vital wins. The squad on paper is great in my opinion yet I feel it's not reaching it's true potential and it's hard to understand why that is, whether the manager's doing something wrong or the players are just not getting their arses in gear. ^^^ Brilliant
It's strange, although it was the same on old 606. As you say, SoS, there is a certain amount of schizophrenia among Spurs' fans. The irony is that the team has been very steady over the past 30+ years. Spurs can always be found occupying one of around eight positions in the league table. Never fighting for the title; never battling against relegation! Spurs fans should be soporific.
How can a Spurs fan be deluded? We're not exactly known for saying next year will be our year...with the possible exception for when talking about a Leandro Daimao transfer.
Realism built out of a foundation of year on disappointment . I do admire our upbeat brethren who think, We play good football, Defoe is a top striker, Siggy adds class, Hotlby was a brilliant buy and as good as Hazard, Oscar etc, Dembele is better than Modric and make's us a better side, VDV was worth getting rid of because Daniel got 10m, We are not a 1 man team, Naughton could become a top fullback, We will go bankrupt if we spend any real net dosh, Daniel loves us, best chairman known to mankind, double his 2m salary, he's worth it. AVB is the world's master tactician . I would love to join this cosmos of free love, but sadly realism kicks in.
We get called deluded for saying we are better than Liverpool (true) and we have a chance of getting in the CL (also true for last 3-4 years)
I disagree on Defoe. Met him too and he's a nice guy. Harsh IMO. I'd take him over our lot anyday, as would most sides.
"We get called deluded for saying we are better than Liverpool (true) and we have a chance of getting in the CL (also true for last 3-4 years)" They epitomise the arrogance that somehow their "history" guarantees them a position above the likes of Spurs, not matter how ****e they are. If their supporters embraced one of the stock market maxims, their lot in life would be be much better of late.
