Just seen this on another site, I'd say it is pretty much bang on! Often, the difference between a football fan and a supporter is ticked off as the same concept which is a mistaken ideology. The difference between the 2 terms is principally based on a person's interest on learning the legacies, rivalries and the traditions of a particular club. So in essence, a fan is simply someone who casually watches a match regardless of the club's ideologies and worries generally about the outcome of the match. On the other hand, a supporter is a person who honours and respects the club's traditions and sticks with the club at all times irrespective of the outcome of its matches. Are you a supporter????
I dare say most of us would claim to be both, Dave, I know I would anyway, because as much as I value and respect the traditions of the club, results are by no means immaterial.
I'm not sure I agree with those comparative definitions, TBH Dave. Surely 'Fan' = 'Fanatic' , and suggests a more 'extreme' standpoint.
Sadly only 4 people on this site can actually ban someone JK. Luckily one of them is me. Now where's that button?
I think you are all missing the point, if you are a supporter, that means you are automatically a fan as well, if you are only interested in a team when they are doing well, then you are simply a fan! It's not rocket science!
So if I'm a 'supporter', I'm automatically 'fanatical'? Nah. Sorry Dave, I'm not with you on this one.
Wecll there we differ then, I am totally obsessed with all things NCFC and will remain so till the day my toes point up!
That's what it's all about Maestro, we all have opinions and we are allowed for them to differ, it's what makes the world go round!
I don't think thats true. The difference as I would describe it is that a fan does not have to give anything back to the club (although technically this is virtually impossible), whilst a supporter does, be it financial or vocal or even a dissenting voice as long as the clubs interests are at heart.
Holy mother of mercy - you saw it here first - a Crab and a Shannock actually locating some common ground! Last time that happened, Boudica ruled over the Kingdom of the East Angles
